I've just finished a first pass at a rigging reel and would love for you guys/gals to check it out.

Everything is production work except for the autorigging script which is something I've been working on in my spare time. I'd like to do another pass on it so any comments/critiques would be awesome.

It's a really cool reel. The dynamics to joints is pretty cool. I love the facial setup as well. My only comment is on space switching. It was a little too long and I would keep it after facial setup. I would also edit out or speed up some part of it.

hey man, cool reel, just a few things stick out to me..

first of all, your reel is totally backwards, you showed the best (the face rig and bug) last

The leg rig creation was cool... like I liked the way you were able to manipulate it into place so easily, but after that it was seriously dragging. I would edit that part way down

Also... on the face rig, are you able to smooth that? I just noticed when you pulled the cheeks up it was kind of pointy lookin

anyway, lookin forward to the next iteration! keep up the good work

theflash - Your probably right about the space switching. I do switch it like four times which is probably unnecessary. I'll see if I can shorten it.

archanex - I'm gonna go in and take a look at the order again. The legs were the last thing I finished so I just automatically put them first. The face is smoothed once, it's pretty low poly. I think the reason I didn't put it higher was because it was causing some slowdown with the screen capture software running. I've been wanting to re-record that bit anyway so I'll see if I can get it working with a higher level of smoothing.

Thanks a bunch guys. That's really helpful. I'll repost it after I make some revisions.

Very nice reel. I agree the bug should def be first, that is really cool. The leg part shows you know Mel really well so I would def leave it in there, just maybe shorten that part up.

How long have you been working with rigging? I see you classify yourself as a animator, but I haven't seen anyone with this amount of rigging knowledge call them self an animator. Do you do this on the side while you animate at your company?

Regardless, very impressive reel.

Thanks Dan. The feedback is much appreciated.

I've been rigging for almost 2 years now. About two and a half years ago Flurry decided to incorporate Maya into the pipeline for rigging and animation, whereas before we did everything with LightWave. So there was a period where everyone was learning Maya at the same time. I had always found the setup tools in LW kinda frustrating so when I started learning Maya I was surprised to find that with a better toolset I actually found rigging really rewarding. Long story short, I got really into it and then volunteered to help out with some production rigging. I'd say I now spend about half my time rigging, half animation.

Nice, sounds like you got yourself a nice company to be with. I have a month before I have to start on the content for my reel, so I watch a lot of other peoples reels to see what they have on theirs and what I should be putting on mine. Every time I start to comfortable with where I need to be at, I see a reel that raises the bar. Your bug setup didn't raise the bar, it flat out took it away. LoL.
