I was looking for some opinions on which is the better option for character animation. Cstudio or max IK.

That's a big question with no easy answer. What are you planning on making exactly? What version of Character Studio? If the character is basically human, then Character Studio can be useful if you've got it, but if you've got version 3.x or below, then finetuning those animations can be a pain, since you don't have the option to look at curves in trackview.
Max IK can be a pain to set up, but once it's done you can do a lot with it, especially with the options of spline IK and such if you have Max 5.1.
It really depends on the character and the project you're putting it into. We need to use Character Studio because the engine we use requires skinning done with Physique. For the most part, we lean towards max bones, because it gives the flexiblity to desgin your own rig and control it however you like.
