I have a HUGE problem and if anyone could help, i would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks so much...here is the prob...

I am trying to do my UVs on a poly model. I have tried everything i know to do, with now luck. I will select the parts of the model I want, get them all layed out in the UV Tex Editor, then, when I smooth the model to 2 divisions, the texture explodes into little squares.

I have tried, laying out the UVs, then applying a smooth node...explode

I have tired applying a smooth node then laying out UVs....explode

I have tried using UV sets, using UV linking, I have tried all i know. The texutre looks fine in low poly mode, but when i change to 2 division (which gives the model the exact look i am wanting) the texture just explode. I have even tried working complete with the model in 2 divisions smooth mode, but that TAKES FOREVER and still, the texture explodes..

What can i do to solve this problem and get this guy textured??? I am using Maya 5, but I had the same problem in 4, and 4.5 so, what am i doing wrong? Is there a step i am missing?

Thanx a lot!

i have no idea, but just a suggestion, try converting it subD. that might be a work around.
what do you mean explode, tiny pieces mean not sewn or just really crazy uv's

hey!!:wavey:
never seen this problem before but i thought i would just make a suggestion......

have you tried converting it to sub-divisions 1 first?
maybe it's too much for your comp to handle all at once?
this is a very long shot but all i can think off.

goodluck with it.

cheers!!

is there a button somewhere that you have to click to keep u,v's. (don't have maya on this comp so i can't look , sorry)

Do the textures look exploded even when you render the object? If it doesnt it could totally be a graphics card problem.

Also when i have a weird problem like that i also try..

1.) different image formats ie: iif's, tiffs, tgas
2.) Export the file to obj then import it back in
3.) reset your poly normals
4.) reduce the polys by 0%
5.) triangulate it, the manually delete the triangulated edges if you dont like working them.

Dont ask me why these things have worked for me cause frankly i dont have a clue. Just give em a try.

I think i know what your talking about. I heard maya has had a problem with UVs and smoothing (and converting to subD). I had this problem too when i converted to subDs. They didn't expload, but shifted all around (unsewed themselves and moved). I just buckled down and sew them back together... i hope you have better luck
