also, flare in the specular highlights helps a WHOLE lot too. Usually you'll want to do flare as a 2D post-process because in a real camera it happens in the optics, in front of all the objects in the scene.

P.S. I don't mean the cheezy "lens flare" effect found in so many packages, but something that looks like real flare. Try pulling out the highlights from your render with a threshold operation and blurring, then adding (or multiplying) back in.
