View Full Version : 3D Interactive Model of Heart: Serious CG!
angelmax 05-09-2009, 10:07 AM Just wrote about an interesting application of 3D Computer Graphics: from 3D modeling and texturing to animation and real-time rendering.
Glassworks (London) worked at a scientific simulation of the Human Heart.
(Hey guys, just to be clear, I am NOT related to the nice people behind this work. I just wrote an article about them: I will redirect all of your compliments and nice words to them. Thanks  )
It beats!

At first I thought about how it could possibly take two years to create this, but then I saw the video and it just blew my mind. There is some serious work behind this.
Great work to the people that made this.

I could do that with 2 days and a case of RedBull.
Just kidding. I'm a med animator also, and I think that looks awesome.

Used to work in the medical animation field myself and I'm aware what an enormous job it is to recreate accurate motion of the heart beating alone, but amount of details and accuracy in this work blows my mind.
Congratulations.

That is beauuutiful.
Amazing work!
And as it will help students learn about heart structure, which will probably make them better doctors, I think I can even say thank you! ;) :)
Our r&d guys here wrote their own application to host the heart model so it's not using any prebuilt game engine.

Huge work !
How did you manage to recreate the valves animation when they open and close ?
Its basically a mix of simulation (Cloth&Springs) and hand animation.
Nobody got killed during the process I promess !

it really does look good.
but if your going to spend 2 years to do something so amazing, why not spend a little more time and get a narrator who doesn't sound like shes reading directly from a Que card.

Fantastic work! Back in med school I always dreamed of something like that, especially the feature to analyze ultrasound images like that.
5 stars!

That looks really cool.... hard to believe it's realtime.
I can't watch it more thana couple of seconds cause I get light-headed. :)

Stunning work!! Iīm totally amazed. Canīt imagine, how the realtime, cutaway works. Something like that, I only Know from programs like SolidWorks or ProE.
Thumbs up for the great work!

Lightwave can handle volumetric 3D CT scans < that is not technically accurate but it gets the point across > I've been meaning to tear into Lightwave to get some of that type of functionality up and running for my medical animations. There is no way with even actual scans that you would get the level of detail that was created here. Even with the new HD scan technology coming out. I would love to know how the research material was obtained to get the motion, textures, shaders, and everything right on this. Excellent work on multiple levels not often seen on cgsociety and absolutely worth front page. Cheers to the guys who worked on this. Superb, stunning, awe inspiring. There needs to be more behind the scenes on this. It's too good not to share with others how it was pulled off. PLEASE!
Thanks for sharing.

wow .
really really great realtime job .
I really like to know what is the tools and engine that you used .
The model is a normal polygon model and not made up from volume data. We were in touch with a hospital here in london and they provided a lot of the reference for us, movies, pictures, scans etc. I was only responsible for the textures and lookdev of the heart and that was done in Bodypaint and Softimage.

Hey, I'm the person that emailed you guys today, I've already gotten a helpful reply back.
Cool! :)
It's amazing that Softimage can do this - yes in fact - any CGI application for that matter.
Just goes to show how flexible they are towards very organic forms.
Is the model a subdivision polygon mesh?
And why did you opt for a mesh instead of, say, NURBS?
I'm guessing - ease of animation.
But I'm just taking a pot-shot :p
This is very cool, and I'm sure lots of people share my opinion.

Does anybody know a place to get a beautiful big rendering of the image thumbnail on the first post? I'd just love to see it in gorgeous detail, don't think I would use it as a wallpaper though, a little to creepy for that :p
