My suggestions are:

1. Draw the outline in Illustrator and extrude it

2. Use the bridge tool on a heavily subdivided cube

3. Use an alpha channel on a metalic shader for the holes.

I'd sure like to hear if anyone knows an easier way too.

Well, i guess it depends on the level of detail you need.
My first approach was to draw a n-sided polygon with 6 sides and duplicate it along the area to fill. Then i converted all objects into an editable mesh and connect them all. After that i created a sweep nurbs with that shape and a circle.
This method works but it's a bit slow.

A faster way to do it would be to draw the same shape in illustrator and fill the area you need. Then i'd offset the shape to get some thickness.
Save as .ai and import it to C4D. Drop into an extrude nurbs and you got it. You can use rounded caps to obtain the effect you're looking for.

I hope this helped in anyway.
Good luck

just did it. took me like all of 20 minutes. let me know and I can email you the c4d file.

used freehand and made the graphic. exported to an illustrator 8 file (.ai) and then merged that into the scene in C4D. Connected the pieces, then extruded them. Easy breezy!

Yeah, this is clearly a texturing job, not a modeling job. The model should be a plane, and all the detail should come from a texture. That is, unless you're going to be right up against this thing, but even still, with the appropriate texturing skill, you could make this look like a million bucks by mapping a plane.

Never model something if you don't have to, and if the audience isn't going to notice the difference, then who cares. The motto of one of my instructors: "If it looks good, it IS good."

I agree that you shouldn't model something you dont have to, but I find it a lot easier to create something like this in freehand and extrude it, than to tweek BhoudiNuts all over the place. I know they are powerfull and can do it, but for me its just easier this way.

yup i totally agree with you brent but in this instance i need a mesh as it will be used on a space ship type model i have created and i wanted a mesh so that u can see the detail (the engine components) through the mesh aswell.

oh and geoff i have made an attemp at making the mesh but i would deffinately like to see how u did yours,, my e-mail address is mazar_hussain@hotmail.com
thanx :)

You should still use a texture. Just use an alpha mask to cut out the holes and you'll be able to see through it just as you would see through screen mesh.

Hey man,

Here's an example of using textures to achieve this material. It took about 10 minutes in photoshop (forget SLA for this type of thing unless you need the camera to track through one of the holes). IMHO, textures are the only logical way to achieve this. Modeling this is shooting yourself in the foot, workwise, and in rendertime.

Here's a single poly with a texture applied:

Here are the textures, more or less:

PS - sorry for the big images...
