I've had this problem a couple of times and can't seem to fix. Basically I add a transparency ramp to the life transparency of the cloud particle to create a simple falloff before the particle blinks out. Works great for awhile and then at some point it breaks. Now the transparency fades out nicely and then immediately drops away to nothing. (Reading that it seems confusing. Basically the transparency fails at the tail end of the smoke trail and the particles become visible again. I've changed the ramp, the shader etc. I can't seem to bring it into line. Any suggestions?
