A very reliable source close to Duke Nukem Forever developer 3D Realms today confirmed to Shacknews that the company has been shut down.

Well its no bloody wonder - they announced Duke Nukem Forever just after I left school back in 95 and they are only just getting round to making the damn thing? :curious:
Time waits for no one, and the games industry is one of the most cruel teachers of that lesson. I more than anyone hate to see people loose their jobs, but this particular company had it coming.
Here's hoping the employees find work again soon.

Do you think I can get my deposit back?

What have they released to make money recently anyway, how is it they even had the money to go this many years without releasing any games (or anything for that matter)?
So is the Duke Nukem franchise officially dead or will it be picked up by another developer?

No Alan Wake?

No Alan Wake?
Remedy is the studio working on Alan Wake I believe so its unaffected.

Remedy is making Alan Wake and it'll be published by (IIRC) Microsoft. I don't think 3D Realms has anything to do with the Remedy team and their games anymore. I think Max Payne is owned by Rockstar now.

Alan Wake? Holy cow, I hadn't thought of that in years! I remember seeing the preview screen shots maybe 4 years ago . . .

pulled this from kotaku.com
Following rumored reports (http://kotaku.com/5243277/is-duke-nukem-developer-3d-realms-gone-for-good?skyline=true&s=i) that Duke Nukem devs 3D Realms had given up the ghost, reps for publisher Deep Silver (http://kotaku.com/tag/deep-silver/) issued a statement that everything was going full steam on the Duke compilation. Additionally, the recently revived Apogee (http://kotaku.com/5024833/apogee-return-to-feast-on-the-living-and-duke-nukem), as a separate entity, would continue.
"Deep Silver (http://kotaku.com/tag/deep-silver/) and Apogee Software are not affected by the situation at 3D Realms," reads the statement. "Development on the Duke Nukem Trilogy (http://kotaku.com/tag/duke-nukem-trilogy/) is continuing as

Well it was about time. 12 years to make a game?! Can't get away with that, obviously :)

It's not like this is the only title they have worked on during that time. Max Payne was a pretty big hit for them.
I'm a little bummed about this. 3D Realms was my favorite developer back in the faux 3D days and how could you not like Duke. I hope the franchise makes some recovery and not just remake after remake of the original.

I'm not buying into this just yet. Unless George Brussard 3D Realms invested with Madoffs ponzi scheme.
I'm calling the game was completed - a large part of the dev team was realistically let go - but the whole close is a PR stunt - Maybe. I've been looking and so far no posts from artists who were working DN4ever. Expect to see (hear) some DN4ever sound bites just before release. Hmm maybe wishful thinking. Don't count Duke out :D

if this keeps up, Duke is gonna be the most famous, most anticipated game that was never released of all time

They have shut down and there are some 50 or so artist out of work from what I have heard. You can't even access the 3dRealms website (http://www.3drealms.com), it never connects.

I did. and if you look at some of the threads its a real laugh. I'm now more convinced this will turn viral with nutty improbable outrageous clues to support it. Read this by a former 3DRealms employee....Gaming is Stupid (http://gamingisstupid.com/2009/05/06/the-chair-story-revival/). That is great fiction and what a libelous warped idea - Its...Unreal...ha ha ha.
I'm sure that the design team has been shushed and you wont hear a word from them while links to stories like the one above will make people think twice. Unlike recently when Lucasarts abruptly dumped their in house devs or any other abrupt closer, those affected had a voice. This one is different. What 2 - 3 - 4 weeks walk into retailer see completely unpromoted box for Duke Nukem Forever.

Please, do not publish Duke Nukem Forever.
This is my most romantic dream, and anticipation for all time.
Some time ago i swore that if that game gets published there will be nothing more to live for and i would have to suicide ! No really ! Really !
Please don't ...
Have pitty ...
Who needs 3D engines and crap like that :/ when we have DosBox and the good old Duke.
Come on people get a grip.
Go play WoW and leave Duke alone :wavey:

Through another friend I found out that there are some 50+ people looking for work now. So if it is a PR stunt they are serious about it with joking around with people's lively hood.
If you think this is a joke, then you have no respect for the people who have lost their jobs over this.

Ahhh Eric... thanks for the clarification. I appreciate it.
In that case WTF were Broussard and Miller thinking over the past year. Makes me wonder how legit the Jason Hall video playing DN4ever levels? 15 years for what?
Even though John Romero skewered himself something fierce with Daikatana - He still managed to release it.
The irony in this is I can see a publisher buying the rights to finance and develop it from whatever state its in. Smack George and Scott egos handily and force milestones on DN4ever till completion.

I wonder if this ever goes to court. How much the public will learn of the goings on over the past decade. I'm sure allot of the cavalier statements they made will come back to haunt them.

I hope that they sue the managers of 3D realms, well only the managers who made this all happen.
I bet they are some where now with alot of cash after the close down, yet those 50+ artist have to struggle on, after spending more than decade of there life for nothing.
Seriously, i hope take two sue the owners and managers for everything they have, and then some!

In 2007 a significant number of DNF artists left 3D Realms. George even had to spin it a good way saying much of their work was done anyway (Yep - heard that one before). The actual count wasn't confirmed, but it was enough to get him to reply. So I don't know how many or if any of the current artists were around for the full twelve years.
In the end I agree though. Fully mismanaged in every sense of the word, self funded or not. TakeTwo paid 12 Mil for publishing rights for a game 3D Realms failed misserably to produce. Ohh the drama....
