I downloaded the Maya PLE version 8.5, and I've been having some serious problems when attempting to paint skin weights on a mesh that has been smooth bound.

If I add positive influence to a joint, then everything is fine. But when I try to remove influence (making it black), it doesn't work whatsoever. I can paint it completely black, but if I deselect the mesh then reselect it, the weights are reset back to how they originally were! It is as if I had never painted it black at all.

The "hold weights" button is not active for any of the joints, and I've tried changing the max influences up to 5. I also tried using the "Update Weights" button, and this just seems to reset EVERYTHING back to default, including areas I've painted white.

Is this just an issue with the PLE edition of Maya?

Check Smooth Bind Options > Max Influences, if there`s more then 1 and Maintain max influences is checked.

edit:

oops, you said you tried 5 max influences. hmm...

It could be the PLE version. Have you tried making the adjust in the component editor?

window>general editors>component editor

That usually gives you better control.

I figured out a workaround. It seems that the "replace" function doesn't work for a value set to zero (at least in the PLE version). Painting weights black won't affect anything. To reduce the weight in an area, I had to increase the weight on that same area for another joint. Needless to say, skinning my rig was an real pain in the ass using this method, but it's done and over.

Actually it`s the best way to skin imho.

You have control over where those weight will be distributed. By using replace you allow Maya to do that for you, not neccesarly where you want to, usually messing skinnig up if you didn`t hold weights ;)
