Topic: RolePlayGame Weapons
This includes melee weapons, staffs as well as mechanical weapons. The weapons can go from fantasy (eg. Dungeon Siege) to scifi (eg. Fallout3).
Presentation: Wireframe + Beauty rendering
The images should be bright and large enough to see all the details.
It's up to you how much time you spend for texturing/rendering. The 90 min are only for modeling! Everything else is additional time and doesn't count, as long as you don't touch the model anymore.

I was quite confident to see that sword in this challenge. It's a nice start, you've got a good looking beauty shot!

Digitool: The model is a solid piece of work. I'd only nag about the "smooth" looking ornaments, but modeling those nicely takes quite some time, in 3dsMax at least...
I planned to model a post-apoc. nailgun, build of junk...it turned out to be the deluxe version of a nailgun. It's supposed to work with overpressure, not sure if that counts as a mechanical weapon concept. I drew a rough pencil "sketch" before I started modeling. Yet I didn't finish in time. 117 min on this one, mostly because in the end I decided to model one part again, plus some nasty gaps to close.

For me its even more impressive because it was done in 117 minutes! Nice work zortech.
Nice model digitool! I like those ornaments, adds a lot to the image.

The Legend of Zelda is considered an RPG by some, so here's Link's hookshot (my version, since the look of the hookshot changes with every game it seems). I didn't keep good track of the time it took to model, but it was around an hour.

Here's my entry. It's not from any rpg in particular (i'll try to find time to make a weapon from some specific game). I believe it took around 1 hour, i don't remember it exactly.

I keep following your efforts and decided it's time I got involved. I'm new to modelling...learning Max and Zbrush. Thought I'd go for a literal hand cannon. Modelled roughly in Max, imported to Zbrush where I added detail and then exported the Normal Map to be used in the final render. Feedback is much appreciated. There were tons of things I wanted to do that I just didn't know how to do in Zbrush...ie. add straps to keep it in place. Anyway, here it is. Took me 80 minutes.

I think you have a pretty good concept and base model and a good start, but I think those scratches and dents are a little too heavy and frequent IMO. They kind of make the render, at least against the black background, hard to comprehend whats going on.
Thats just my .02 but like I said it's a real good start and judging by the wire, you got a decent mesh.

Thank you for the response. Yeah, I wholeheartedly agree with you. I overdid the scratches and dings. I should have spent more time in Max, but it was fun, and good practice. I'll definitely be trying again.

Here's my model. A Wizards staff made from the claw of a dragon. Took me just over an hour to model, although unwrapping took a while but we won't go there!

New forum member/modeler here. Stumbled across these forums a couple of days ago - noticed the competition section and figured I'd give it a shot (seems like good practice, if anything). Disclaimer: these are the first things I've ever really modeled - forgive the incredibly poor lighting/renders (I have absolutely no idea how to do either).
I figured I'd go with something about as non-traditional as RPG weapons go. These aren't "weapons" in the conventional sense - but I think they're still in the spirit of the theme. These are pins from the Nintendo DS RPG The World Ends With You (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World_Ends_With_You) - one of my favorite games of all time. In-game they come in a million different designs, and when equipped each grants your character a different type of attack. I threw together three different pins - each with a different color scheme. The left pin has the emblem raised, flat, and filled in. The middle pin has the emblem fairly flush. The right pin has only the outline of the emblem raised (it's kind of hard to see). These ended up taking slightly longer than I thought they would - apparently a laptop touchpad isn't exactly the optimal tool for drawing out curves. Spent just over an hour modeling, and just over two hours trying to make them look presentable (mostly learning time).
Anyways, awesome work in here guys. Animasta - the hookshot and Cloud's sword beauty shots look, well, beautiful. Zortech - that nailgun belongs in Quake 5.

well, it is pretty much the purpose of these forums... to work on increasing your skill and efficiency. I think you've got a better start at modeling than I did when I started! Just keep practicing, participating, finding tutorials online to try and learn how to get better at it... AND STICK WITH IT.

MrGear: i liked your model, i just think you should make the blade more rounded.
You can upload your image to the forum, there's an option called 'Attach Files'. Just upload there. You have a very limited space to use, so the best option is to use sites like photobucket or imageshack and paste the image code on your reply.

I decided to go for a composite long bow, supposedly for really long distances. It uses both, the elasticity of the wood and the conservation of energy of a spring system. I tried to make it look like it could work in the real world, but just now I noticed that the string might easily come off of it's place.
It was really fun to model and design this one! Really easy too, coz most of it had two symmetry modifiers, so I just had to do 1/4.
Took me about 1hour and 10 minutes, + materials, scene set up and rendering.
Beauty shot comming soon.
PS: I've tried to post this yesterday, but didn't realize I was logged in with an obsolete user I'd done a long time ago, with an old email account. If another post like this one comes up, please just delete it. :shrug:

Here is my Axe. I had some problems with the Blade and I'd spent a lot of time fixing it.. then I decided to deleted it to make the blade again :) Hehe. Athough, it is pretty hard to do as much as you can within the time frame. Anyway, cool contest :)

this has been quite the successful competition...
It's been running longer than it should have, though, I'd say...
Should we go ahead and call it closed?
I've had a thread up and running for ideas on the next challenge so we can get started on it but not many people have seemed to find it just yet, check it out and as soon as possible we'll get another challenge up and going.

Sounds good....onto the next challenge! Eager to improve...darn you guys with your stellar performances. Gotta say having a time constraint kind of makes me feel like I'm writing an exam, but also doesn't give me the opportunity to say...'I'll get to it later'

yeah, well what may make it easier to work with is if you keep like a stopwatch or your cell phone if it has a stopwatch kind of running timer... and then if you need to kind of take a break and step away just pause your time and do so.
Also, don't think of it as trying to get a whole challenge done in a certain timespan right away, you may want to just start modeling at a comfortable pace at first and when the time is just see where you are and set where you'd like to be and then work for a few challenges on adjusting your workflow and stuff to get where you want to be...
just some suggestions on how to help out there.
