This is Effigy, created a year ago by myself and Dark Horizon. It's been in a close to finished state for about 5 months now. Neither myself nor Dark Horizon know why it took so long to finish up the last few things and get this one out, but it happened after all. It's weighing at a reasonable 3082 poly's, uses two 1024x1024 skins and has a bone count of 79 which is probably the only thing that makes this model a slightly bigger impact. It's got a custom ragdoll (which looks quite impressive with that setup), custom sounds and naturally it's fully custom animated.

We tried to go for something entirely different from anything that's even come close to being imported into UT2003, and we also wanted to do something a bit in the style of magdalena. This is undoubtably the best stuff I've ever done, give or take a few animations and I think the same thing goes for Jason. Clicking the big picture will get you the model itself, a ut2mod and a readme file zipped, weighing 5,3 megs in total. The images below are linked to animations (divx 5.05), all movement animations but I just love how those turned out.

Enjoy the model, it was a hassle but next time we'll have non of the novelty-issues and frustrations so expect that one to be out a bit sooner. Bother Jason and I are really happy with the outcome and very motivated to do the next, luckily. Let us know what you think, that's always appreciated!

That is really just sweet! Very well done. The animations seem so dead on for this character it's freaky. I love the organic movement and all the interaction between the two bodies.

You should really be entering this into the 'Make Something Unreal' contest. I imagine you'd win something with a model of this calibre. :applause:

truely nice work! I am amazed how nice the texture is (by that, i also mean the unwrapping job is awesome). the good thing is, the model doesn't look like it only has less than 4k poly counts at all. beautiful!

got to go check out the animation now :)

Speechless.

Nice run, would love to take a peek at the rigging.

I tried to DL but says I have to be a FilePlanet member even after I got an ISpy account.

Is there another way to get the files. Is it a maya file...I hope.

Downloaded it earlier today and tried it out. Abso-frigging-lutely amazing work. Everything from the textures to the rigging, even the ragdoll, are all simply incredible. I'll have to keep my eye out for this Magdalena now.

I, too, however, am curious about the large number of bones in the model, and am hoping you could shed some light on this aspect.

Cheers, and congrats on the well-deserved plug. :)

it looks like a pro model, just like the actual UT2K3 guys did it! . the animations are great to, i really liked how the wee man bobs about!

But what is the u2mod? is that meaning for Unreal 2?
whatever, i'll figure that out...

so if i use the mod file and not the .u and.upl files this will be usable online? like everyone will be able to see it? or will it just be replaced in their view with a generic character?

SkullboX
07-17-2003, 02:56 AM
Yes, if you do not install the .upl. .u and .uax files it wil lwork in online play, but other players will only be able to see that model if they have it on their hard drive as well.

Here's a picture of the rig that shows the bones in this skeleton. As you can see the hands are fully rigged and it's set up for some minor facial animation (especially the beast). That especially contributes to the higher bone count that most regular models, not too much of an impact though, for as far as I've experienced.

well that kind of sucks... this is a really really great model...

i've just never really seen the point in having custom models if nobody can see it unless they have the model as well.

kiaran
07-17-2003, 03:08 AM
I was just taking a look at your model. It's all triangles. Does the UT2003 engine need the model to be in triangles? Just curious because most modelers I know stick to quads like a religion.

Anyway, good stuff. I really like the walk cycles. The feeling of weight and motion is definetly there. Congrats on the frontpage treatment :)

A bone on eahc side of the piston, then look-at contrainst used to look at each others pivots.

If we'd all have a lower jaw, we'd all be be the same, and that's unoriginal. Don't ponder about stuff like that, the whole thing is impossible either way, this day and age at least, muhahaha.

Thanks again for the comments! By the way, this model was put op on the front page the first day I posted this here, does that make this a "CGtalk choice", with the cute award that comes with it? Since Effigy and Magdalena share a similar kind of design (gore, cyborg, etc.) we figured we'd best do something else in between. So the only thing I know about what will be next is that it's not going to be similar in style, as I sadly haven't been able to concept something half decent.

Thanks again everyone!

So the only thing I know about what will be next is that it's not going to be similar in style, as I sadly haven't been able to concept something half decent.

I'll be waiting with baited breath ;)

I love the Walk left!

It looks great.

Gives a real feel of motion. The poor driver looks like he will get flung from the set at any moment.

Great job!

This might be a very silly question :) but after looking at Skulls model and the wireframe image:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~eriksch/skullbox/Effigy/images/Effigy_rig_thumb.jpg

something confuses me.

To me, it looks like Skull has got mulitple skeletons, bone structures inside his model. Each structure attached to a separate section of the model.

How has he done this or am I reading it wrong. I thought each model had to be 1 skeleton and 1 skeleton only.

Didn't notise these posts before, sorry.

Riyazgomes, thanks for the offer but I'm already employed at Liquid Development doing Character animation, and I hardly have time for that.

Seven, I've awnsered you through email as well, but here's the awnser:' "The only thing you have to keep in mind when building an UT2003 rig, is that everything has to be linked to the same root. In other words, you can have as much bone chains as you want - but the first bone of each chain will have to be linked to a 'root', or any other bone linked to that root. The Effigy rig has one big dummy object in the center (which is hidden in that picture) to which the little guy, the neck, the tail and the legs are all linked to, using the link tool (from the main toolbar)."

this is really awesome.

my only comment would be from a design perspective i'm not sure why the riding characters feet would be inbedded into the other creature, primarily because the seat back and other mechanical additions seem to conflict with it.

Hey man, you might want to edit your original post again and change the download URL to
http://www.fileplanet.com/files/130000/134566.shtml

Since the current link doesn't work anymore, and since this thread is being revived and applauded again :)

And to M_O:
My guess is the feet meld in with the scary creature so they both die together ;) Since it is kind of 2 characters in one model
