I've had some pretty good results with a plug-in called Hair Department. You can find it at the plug-in cafe at Maxon's site. It really is a must have plug. Only thing is that it doesn't have any documentation. Here is a short tutorial by dandavis that I found at Renderosity. It's pretty good.

hair dept v.1.83 and docs, creates grass very easily.
search for it I remember some one posted directions on how to create very very realistic grass with hiar department.

It was the late Dan Davis, and the renderosity link was posted above by 3d Explorer.

you can make grass with "shave and a haircut, too.
also you can do it with alphamaps, the alphamap-method is the best for slow pc's cause ts just a map (but looks good, too).
"surface painter" is a good tool, too, made by paul everett.
motiongimmick, too, has a tool called "Grass or what", and lust but not least there's xfrog, a program which can creat every plant or grass you will ever see in the world, but its kinda expensive.

Anyone know what happened to the site?
anyone know what was on that site?

Storm Tracer does grass very fast (and you can add in wind etc to your scene too if you wish).

You can do pseudo wind with Shave using noise, but I wouldn't recommend Shave for grass. It's too slow and too hard to control when the hairs are very short in relation to the growth object.

It had freeware plant and grass generators. Perhaps there are some mirrors around for the links?

A quick (cheesy) test of Storm grass:

Forty seconds render time with 750,000 blades.

yep, there are a lot of ways to create grass so I want to line up. ;)
You can make grass with DPIT Nature spirit too. It has an advanced grass engine including Wind animation, collision detection and growth of grass. The engine is based on the HD algorithm but was developed way further and the generation is calculated on-the-fly.
More info on DPIT here: www.dpit2.de

Katachi,
Can DPIT handle large lawns, like the rendering posted above? I tried using Hair Department for this and the poly count quickly got out of hand. What do you mean when you say that it's calculated "on-the-fly"? Is it something like SPD in R9?
thanks,
Jack

You can have some from my personal stash.
Shave can create great grass and can be tweaked to produce quick renders.

yup, lots of methods, here's a simple 30 second render form storm showing a bit more dynamic grass
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/samples/jpg/grassring.jpg (http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/samples/jpg/grassring.jpg)
and here's the same thing with triple the blade count, but a third the opacity for a softer grass look 1 minute and 13 seconds render time though.

Hey Per, does StormTracer support Radiosity?

Yeah, if it's a little patch like that. A big lawn or rolling hills is another thing.

Hey Per, does StormTracer support Radiosity?I discovered when I was playing around that it does. I was quite surprised.

InTheCity - No Storm does not recieve or generate GI. but it will render within a gi scene, you will just have to illuminate it with traditional lights (or not use any illumination on the storms).
edit - it does adam? it's not meant to... ah well. if it does then it'll only recieve gi, shouldn't generate any.

Agreed, somebody needs to write a little plugin for distance measurement, so that the settings can be toned down for distant shot.
Everything has it's place though, shave has proven a waste of cash for me, but I'll use it once in a great while.

if you use a weightmap with storm, i seem to recall spending some time making sure that it should be animatable without causing a mess (i'll have to double check that) anyhow, a weightmap controlled by xpresso linked to camera distance should give you what you want, i.e. less stuff far off, more stuff closer to the camera.
[edit to say that yes it works just fine, in theory proximal with a texture should also work though i've not tested that]

Hi,
yes that is possible. Have a look at the helicopter video in the DPIT animation gallery. Here is a direct link: http://www.dpit2.de/gallery/anims/heli.mov
The complete grass that is seen in this scene is generated with DPIT, although it all is real geometry. The key to this is the distance density function and the only sight option of Plantage.
On-the-fly means, that itīs an object generator and once you change any settings it is recalculated immediately (as any other object does too).

Wow, the distance density option sounds really useful. I'll have to download the demo and take a look.

love the flowers on your post, Per. Any chance you could post that preset on the ST forum?
a little compressed test-render from a coming pyro animation. Pyro and camera movement not finished in this one. 165 frames of grass, 650kb (http://www.kokokuva.com/freepicserve/hilt/lawn_offline.mov)
The grass is made with Dpit. When rendering, it consists of 600000 polys (1.9mil when trees added). Average render time per frame is about 2minutes with dual 3.0ghz.
This one still looks like the whole scene is vibrating, but that's because the Plantwind's settings arent set up.
Going to lit the area with a little help from particleIllusion - when it comes to burn things, pIllusion works better than match and can of gasoline. Wish I could buy ST here :hmm:
