hey!!

i have almost finished my high poly characyer that i am soon to animate. the only problem i have is that she is going to have a long flowing skirt.

is it going to be better to do the skirt using cloth or should i stick to poly's.

is cloth easy/hard to work with?

what would be the best way to animate a polygon skirt if thats the best way to go?

is there any way to convert a poly model into a cloth one?

ant tips, advice, opinions would be great.

cheers!!

If you use a cloth plugin like Syflex you could convert a poly object to cloth.

Maya cloth uses "Panels" which is similar to traditional textile production. You have flat panels (made out of NURBS curves). then you you stich it together (where seams are and such). finally you run a simulation to fit it on the object (tweak your cloth settings) and animate.

I dunno how youd do it normally (lots of clusters?).

The whole process for Maya Cloth is in the Docs.

hey:wavey:

thanks for the reply doogie.
i have had a quick look around on the internet for some tutorials and it seems alot easier than i thought , so i am gonna do it in cloth. can't afford the $2,200 for SYFLEX tho so i guess i will be doin' it with the normal maya cloth sim.

Or here is surely the best online tutorial to learn using cloth (shirt).

hey!!

i seem to be having a problem with cloth.....

no matter what i do the simulation always looks the same.
i have tried all the materials that come with the cloth plug-in.
i have tried drastically changing the attributes manually.
but no matter what i do it just always seems to act the same.

i have deleted the sim cache before starting a new simulation. but it's still the same.

i'm trying to stop the cloth from stretching, so i have changed the stretch resistance to something like 400 and it's still stretching.
also the DENIM material that comes with it stretches also. (my jeans are not stetchy)

anyone have any ideas why it might be doing this?

cheers!!

I thought that you can convert poly to cloth in Maya. Maybe I am wrong.

I already ask on cloth on this board. Here are some good replies : http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62103&highlight=syflex

You can, but you really really REALLY don't want to do that. Maya's poly->cloth option severely limits your creation options and it also makes the simulation really screwy, as I found out to my cost recently. Syflex, on the other hand, does this beautifully, but it's pricey.
