Do you mean GI? Global Illumination?
This is a widely subject. Maybe you could do a search in google, this forum or your helpfile (because Max has this feature in r.5 too).
There are also some popular third-party renderer like brazil, vray, finalRender etc.
Or maybe I'm wrong and your are thinking of something different.

The trick to a "cool" basic render is lighting. Instead of using max's default(invisible) lights, you need to add lights to your scene. Theory on lighting is beyond the scope of what can be explained in this thread.
Beginers find alot of joy in using GI. If you're using max 5, just create a "skylight", click the "rendering" menu, and choose "advanced lighting". Turn on "lighttracer", and hit the render button.
Of course, this will not give you perfect lighting, but it will probably look good enough to show off your new model.

Thank you for all your responses.
I just want to acheive the simple effect as I stated in my first post on the thread I now know how to do it, thanks.

a great book on lighting introduction is DIGITAL LIGHTING & RENDERING by Jeremy Birn.
Download vrayFree and mess around with it a little bit, and you'll get "THOSE" type of colors, or to see a free tutorial on it, you should be able to check it out at:
