View Full Version : HMC #20 - Expressions - Olivia Wilde
robo3687 05-05-2009, 01:53 AM Since Roberto confirmed this would be the next challenge I just wanted to put my thread down in preparation.
So my subject for this challenge is going to be none other than 13 herself, miss Olivia Wilde.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xCziYAevpNE/SPRBEk7i8ZI/AAAAAAAAFX4/Q3uXt1rhgFY/s400/Olivia+wilde+newpicjpg.jpg
I've been gathering ref for a while now since the first murmours of this challenge popped up, because if it wasn't the next challenge I was going to model her anyway. I've never modeled a female head before and my past attempts at heads haven't been overly great (I think the last time I tried properly one was the Hollywood Icon challenge).
As for expressions I'll wait and see if Roberto gives us certain ones to work with or if it's for us to decide before I decide on them.
Wish me luck.

That's really good. I mean at least you know to do which model. But I am still thinking~ :-)

@Intervain - it's always good to be the one to get the ball rolling
@waterlilly - thanks, I've always thought she was beautiful which is precisely why I mpicked her, you never want to get bored of your subject...heh...
As for my goals on this challenge I want to try and achieve the following
- Achieve an accurate likeness through poly modeling alone...
- Successfully work with the Mental Ray fast sss skin material and get some photo real results
- get some solid practice in on unwrapping and texturing a model
- try and navigate the pipeline from max to mudbox to max (for skin details)....i've never been able to get a grasp on the whole normal map situation, I've only ever exported hi-res meshes...which isn't a good practice...lol
- I also want to have a go at hair, and see if i can get some realistic results with the hair & fur included with max...
if I can get close to achieving these tasks over the course of this challenge I'll consider it a success....

Thems good goals. Though you can acheive half of that in a couple of hours, the mray sss and realistic version of the character will be the main goals.
Im thinking of entering this one too, but Im very busy. Dunno if Ill be able to manage.

Okay I've been working away at this all morning here's the front and side ref i'm using to make the model.
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/5216/frontged.jpghttp://img14.imageshack.us/img14/1761/sidem.jpg
and i don't particularly have a plan of how to tackle this so i started with the nose
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/3089/001dhyijf.jpg
from there i made my loop for the mouth and filled it in...
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/8702/002kmk.jpg
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/3357/003iwz.jpg
yeh i did put a shell modifier on it but only so the SSS material (which is kinda rubbish atm) would render better...lol....
the mouths not great in the corners so i need to work on that....
oh well...off to mothers day lunch now...will probly have some more updates later on tonight....

quick little update
i made some eyes, best ones i've ever made so far...but they still need improving.....
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/3112/004omg.jpg
after i placed them using the ref i then set about modelling the edges of the eyelids, the bridge of the nose and the beginning of the brow
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/4611/005bbp.jpg
and filled in the gaps and extended the brow up a bit to include a little forehead

more later

Wow. pretty lady. Nice start on the model so far..

made some real progress since i last posted....
firstly i filled out the cheeks and the chin, and whacked a modified version of my front ref just simply planar mapped onto the model for lining up purposes
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/5698/011epi.jpg
did some face tweaking and added some ears
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/555/013qvm.jpg
then i fiddled with the skin shader a bit and added the top of the head and it became quickly apparent that the eyes were waaaaay too far apart....lol...and i suck at eyelashes
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/1741/015ajs.jpg
moved the eyes in a bit, did some new eyelashes and fiddled with the skin shader a bit, it was a bit dark but it did look better....also got rid of the hairline on the texture
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/6977/019kbk.jpg
that was where i was at in the early hours of the morning.....when i got up this morning i got right back into it and just tweaked the model and shader a bit more to try and get the likeness closer, also had a first pass at eyebrows....this is after about 3 hours this morning
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/2315/023mmd.jpg
i'm quite happy with how it looks at the moment...although i still need to work on the likeness some more...

Yeah, her head is way too tall.

what they said, but it really does look like her good job. Could you post a side view? Also it looks like there's a little too much space between her eyes.

Yeah, her head is way too tall.
Good start, looks like her, but agree with Wyattharris.

I have to agree to the others, i just took a picture of her an "marked" the proportions. Hope it helps.

alrighty....after a few days on house i've moved back to 13 for today and i've done quite a lot of tweaking and adjusting and vert shuffling....i shortened the head a bit and you guys were right...it looks a lot better now i think...the jaw needs a little smoothing out....

Hey man, I think you gotta add 1/8 to wide the head out and after that make sure check the position of the eyes/nose/mouth/ear. Those currently don't match. It's good to use photoshop to check proportions.
Have fun! :D

looking a lot better. Her nostrils look a bit to big yet and the bottom of the nose needs to come down a bit more. The eyebrows need to be thinned out a bit as well to bushy as of now. http://www.qoou.se/pix/-wallpaper/go4-olivia-wilde-002.jpg

alright...i've had a bit of an epiphany....
i was confused as to why the facial features weren't lining up....and as i was flicking from my front view to my several camera's it dawned on me....
i was modeling it in an orthographic view but from a perspective based photo. So that whilst the features matched from the front ortho view they didn't match in the perspective views. And they really should match in the perspective and not the ortho.
so i set up some front and side on camera's and got to the poly pushing....and it quickly became apparent how off i was....new one is on the right....

Hey Rob, nice work. It amazes me how fast you move, especially with two threads going. While I find that the new model has better form, the one on the left actually looks more like her. Funny what you say about the orthos, I'm have the opposite issue on mine. In orthos it looks nothing like me, even though the mesh lines up perfectly in front view (the left side of my face, anyway), but when I look at it in ortho, it looks much more like me. Anyway, keep it up and I'm sure you'll get it right.

yeh i know it doesn't look much like her at the moment.....lol...i was only pushing things around for proportions, i've still gotta go back over it and tweak for likeness....
