View Full Version : SKetchbook Thread of Ali Farmer
alifarmer 05-03-2009, 05:53 AM Hello everybody,
Decided this is a great idea to help keep me sketching more often and seeing all the awesome artwork that is going on in this forum, I am looking forward to some crits and a whole bunch of artistic eyes on my work.
Work is taking up a lot of my time at the moment but I really think I need to just try and fit in even a half hour sketch as often as I can so I can keep improving and not get stale!
Here are some older pieces to get this thread going.

I have recently started doing some sketches from old master drawings and am planning on starting a copy of a skull in clay so I will endeavour to keep this thread alive and look forward to any crits and comments.

Oh thanks very much guys! :)
I am really impressed with some of the work I am seeing on this forum. Its great to be amongst so many talented people!
I havent had much formal training in the past but recently I went to study at the Florence Academy of Art for a year. I did sculpture and drawing there and also learnt a lot about anatomy (although I still have a long way to go with that!) Oh and in case you were wondering, I went there with my boyfriend, Chris (LordMcGoat) thats why we have similiar stuff in our sketchbooks!
I have some more stuff to put up which I promise to do asap, but I have to sleep as my eyes are being held open by toothpicks right now...

Wow, welcome! First thing that came to mind was "Wow which atelier/academy were those done at?" That's awesome that you got to study at Florence for a year. Please keep sharing!

Thanks for your kind words.
Plunq - I studied at the Florence Academy of Art (http://www.florenceacademyofart.com/) and it was a fantastic atelier. Check out the gallery on the website.
I have another half life size sculpture that I did there to post. This was a 6 week pose (with 3 hours a day model time). I spent a lot of time chasing the model on this one (it was very hot and he got distracted easily by any noises or mosquitos! -no excuses or anything :) )
Guiseppe
(*EDIT -doh realised i had put up an old wip image and not the final sculpture -i was very tired!)

Here are some caricatures which I had intended to turn into 3d sculpts in ZBrush for a 3dTotal competition but with recently moving to New Zealand unfortunately never got the time... but they were such good fun to sketch
I hope you can guess who they are -I chose relatively easy ones as my first caricatures!

and to kick off my anatomy sketches the all important skull...

This is a work in progess copy of William Bouguereau's 'Amor a Laffut' which I am really enjoying. I love the beautiful quality of light he captures in his paintings, they are so good to study from.

any crits and comments very much welcome.

I am also chuffed as today I found out that some figure drawing classes are kicking off at work soon so that should help in filling my sketchbook! Hooray!

Great eye and work :D
Hi hi, I loved the stephen one.
For the Amor a Laffut, I wish I had time to study like that, looking great.
Wow!

Hey Ali,

Welcome, Ali!
Wow, your work is impressive! What media did you use for elena, rudi, and ernesto? The contrast looks very stunning.
It sounds tough having an easily distracted model, but it was definitely worth your effort. I like his expression. It's like you captured the moment of his discomfort. lol.
Oh, and the second caricature is Mr. Bean, right? Right?
I uh...can't think of anything to crit. I'm in awe and I like how your master copy of Amor a Laffut is progressing. It looks like a fun study to do. Keep it up!

Thanks so much for your comments -I have been away from this thread for a little bit working long hours but its nice to come back to and see such positive feedback.
GB-girl Thanks! I used charcoal for those studies but i think it was called Nitrum charcoal (rather than vine or willow). I also realised I had put up an old version of my sculpture so I have updated that now -I think i must have been half asleep!
More stuff to come soon -I promise.

Just posting up a dragon sketch I did for the recent sculpting challenge on 3dTotal. This is an 8 hour sketch but now I am planning to take this further and refine the sculpt and get some paint on it!
