--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An official statement has been issued from discreet (see below) about a bug in Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 that corrupts .max files for 3ds max versions 3.0 through 5.1.
If you’re using Windows 2000 and 3ds max, do not install Service Pack 4.

some of you probably got this email, but some of you aren't the ones in charge of liscensing software at work or whatever, and may have missed it (like i did)

------- Forwarded message follows -------

Attention All 3ds max Customers,

We have identified and confirmed that installing the Windows 2000 Service Pack 4

causes the corruption of .max files. All 3ds max (.max) files saved with Windows 2000

SP4 installed will no longer load in 3ds max on systems with Windows 2000 SP2 or SP3

installed. Our Engineering Team has narrowed in on the problem and is working with

Microsoft to resolve the situation. In the interim it is strongly advised that all 3ds max

users do not install the Windows 2000 Service Pack 4. If Windows 2000 SP 4 has already

been installed it is suggested that customers revert back to SP2 to create usable (.max)

file content. This affects all 3ds max files created in versions 3 through 5.1

3ds max files created while Windows 2000 SP4 is installed can be retrieved through

either of two workarounds:

Option 1

(Please be aware that some data will still be lost in this workaround.) Revert Windows 2000 SP 4 Systems back to SP3 or earlier Use "File Merge" to retrieve data from corrupted .max files created under Windows 2000

SP4 and resave.

Note: If you have Render Effects or Atmospherics in your max file, use the Merge button

in the respective dialogs.

Option 2

Open corrupted .max files created under Windows 2000 SP4 in Windows XP and resave. Revert all systems back to Windows 2000 SP3 or previous.

Bear in mind that 3ds max 5.1 is officially supported for Windows 2000 SP2, so for

optimum stability revert to this operating system platform to use 3ds max 5.

Thank you for patience and assistance in getting this problem resolved.

I don't use Win2k anymore (all XP Pro machines). At times I think that I should revert back, tho'.

Nonetheless, thanks for the head's up.

I *AM* responsible for licencing MAX at my workplace but I never got an email. I had to read this on this forum.

Discreet really need to sort their distribution and support channels because I never hear anything from my reseller except "Hey, buy a new graphics card"

:annoyed:

Hm, can't remember if I had some problems with it but I don't think so.
Anyway I'm running XP now and it works very well.

[edit]:
Dooh, I should read more carefully because I was thinking about SP 3 :).
So, forget it :)

And your reseller just so happens to have some cards for sale, eh? Typical. Money talks and not service:hmm:

I checked with Microsoft, and this is an unknown issue to their security team.

Is it possible this information is false to stop people from installing a critical security hotfix ? Just a question.

I would at least verify and get a link to a discreet web-page confirming these problems rather than taking it at face value.

Faking emails is extremely simple.

Technical Bulletin August 4, 2003
Topic: Windows 2000 SP4, and Microsoft Hotfix 823908

Discreet Technical Support reports that 3ds max 5.1 has been certified to run on Microsoft Windows 2000 SP2 or Windows XP Pro SP1 only.

A recent Hotfix from Microsoft for Service Pack 4 for Windows 2000 as well as Hot Fix 823980 appear to be causing corruption of files saved from 3ds max and Autodesk VIZ. In particular, you may not be able to open them on another system. It is recommended that 3ds max not be run on this latest version. Please avoid updating to service packs later than SP2 for Microsoft Windows 2000 or SP1 for Microsoft Windows XP, and in particular to not install Hotfix Q823980.

NOTE: Microsoft believes it has identified the problem and has provided a fix (currently in beta) that has been tested by Discreet and found to resolve this issue. If you have a .max file that has been saved after Hotfix 823980 has been installed, you will have to install the new Hotfix, then Open and Save the affected .max files.

Call Microsoft at 800.936.4900 and request Hotfix Q824136.

Excellent.

But I see that both hotfix 823980 and 823908 are mentioned - is it possible there is some typo here ??

The reason is that hotfix 823980 is identical to security bulletin MS 03-26 - a widely recommended security hotfix from MS.

Example code has now also been posted to the internet that details the exploit of this security flaw, so it is probably only a (short) matter of time before worms/viruses appear...

windows 98 is not an officially supported OS for 3dsmax and quite frankly, there's a good reason for that. You're better of getting either win2k or winXP.

I'm using 98 too. Why should I pay
microsoft money for another OS and
buy more RAM? Is there any real
reason?

Personally I'm expecting linux to
run windows apps within the next
two years and I can ditch the whole
mess.

Actually you can run windows programs on Linux today :) ...
using software like VMWare Workstation
http://www.vmware.com/products/desktop/ws_features.html

...only trouble is that it costs about the same as buying a WinXP license :(

"there's no such thing as a free lunch" the ol' saying goes.

Thanks! I feel better about paying
for vmware than windows.
I won't have to patch it every month.
