I'm trying to understand how they rig character in the cartoon serie South Park. Anybody can share ?

I understand the process, but for turning the character side or front or back.... is it something like turning the hierarchy root on Y axis and an expression drive the visibility of parented planes depending the face normals to camera .... or is it something more 2D and creating character sets for each position (side, front, back ....) and making them visibles or not
