View Full Version : max crushes when using shag hair

I am trying to put hair on a animated model (complex model like an octopus) using shag hair
but when I put there hair the MAX crushes and I can't work with the file after.
I notice it happens when i turn the SKIN on for the bones
any one has an Ida how to work around that ?

Well, that sound just awfull. In all my years using the plugin, that has never happened. Maybe we can figure this out.
Are you using shag:fur, or shag:hair?
When exactly does it crash?
Does it give an error message?
Are the values of the hair density too high?
Are there any dynamic effects on the hair?
Does it happen at render?
Can you see the hair in the viewport?
Is the emmiter mesh in motion?
Answer these, and maybe we can figure this out...

When exactly does it crash?
it crushes when I use the skin, I turn it on and the max crush
q. Does it give an error message?
a. only saying : this program caused .....
q. Are the values of the hair density too high?
a. no in fact they are very little
q. Are there any dynamic effects on the hair?
a. I calculate the movement of the body (complex body) I can send u a picture of it
q. Does it happen at render?
a. I never get to render point it just crushes when I work on the scene
q. Can you see the hair in the view port?
a. I can c the hair at first and as long as the skin modifier is turned off (the light next to the modifier)
i can send u the project if u want to test it as well

If you want to send me the project file, I'll have a look at it. One other thing: Is it Max4 or Max3? I can take either, but it may be a little max 4 issue not worked out yet.
If you decide to send me the scene file, please zip it up and make it as small as possible...don't have broad band at home...
I'm sure we can figure this out.

1. did you try uninstalling and installing shag:hair?
2. where in the stack is the shag:hair, before or after the skin modifier?
3. are you using the shag:hair render or the normal render?

I did try to uninstall and nothing helped
now it not that the plug is not working.
if I'll put it on a ball it will work amazing but not on this complicated body

Hi there , just a thought
maybe try using something diffrent from the skin modefier like bones pro 3
or physic for the octupos bones.
or maybe use cylinders that will move with the bones by linking them to the each bone - and they will have the shug hair and not the mesh, then make them invisibal.

If the alien has a meshsmooth at the top of the stack remove it and try again. If that works clone the mesh and add a meshsmooth to the clone, then make the original (the emitter) non-renderable.

I tried to do what Oren said witch spouse to be very simple,
I link the spheres to the end of the hands( last bone) and gave them the hair but it also crushed,
so then I tried to merge only the bones and the spheres into a new scene and tried to it and the same happened,
but if I take 10 spheres and a new scene I put the hair the it works fine.
