Hi guys, welcome to the Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club thread.

The idea of this series of week long threads is to be an incubator for your sequential
art ideas. This mean you can post ANYTHING that will facilitate the creation of your comic. (This means ideas, scripts, Concept Art, Finished art ) for:

One panel Strip
Three to Four Panel Strips
Comic Book
Storyboards (NEW!)
Think of it of a club within the forum for people who WANT to do comics.

GENERAL RULES:

Every Wednesday night a new week long thread will be posted on the CGTalk Daily Sketch Forum (http://forumdisplay.php/?f=130) called:Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club XXX: MONTH YEAR

This will be the CORE thread, created by the moderator, (that would be me)

You can post on the core thread anything you want as long as it related a to a sequential art idea
If yo ualready have a web comic, well SHOW IT to us..
WIP entries should be on the artists WIP thread. This thread might be hosted on the WIP forum OR...the Member SKETCH Collection (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=272)
This is a thread to allow creators to have fun so please feel free post your Comments
IF and only IF we gather enough interest we might start doing voting for:

Best Writing
Best Story
Best Art
Most Updates
Most Views (IE Highest ratings: I want to keep track on who has been getting the highest number of hits on the WIP thread for the comic...more on this later
Keep this in mind.
A monthly comic book has 24 pages. And in order to have enough material for a graphic novel you should need to do 6 issues of a comic.

24 * 6 = 144 pages

This is why most pros do a at least a page a day.

And please if you do comic book, do it in multiple of 2.
Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club 010: December 10 - 16 2008
Hi guys, welcome to the Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club thread.

My advice, KEEP IT SIMPLE

If you think you can't to a full comic book, do a 3 - 4 panel
newspaper strip. 5 - 10 updates a month are more than enough in my book.
And if you are going to do a comic book, do short stories first , since they usually have
4 to 6 pages. Think Twilight Zone, Tales from the Crypt or Amazing Stories for inspiration.
Good luck

What is a good, or basic, layout for a cript. Maybe it's whatever it takes to get the point across? I imagine if one is writing and drawing their own book, the script could look like anything right?

so i remembered a tutorial on here i had saved to my favorites. http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=166&t=307340&page=1&pp=15how to make a comic...any other ideas? I've had something like a script for almost 7 years, but I haven't done anything with it. WHERE DO I START? I think I'll revisit the script and see where that takes me? Any suggestions? I don't have all the characters sketched out yet. Perhaps I should do that? It seems whenever I think of a step to take, I think of another one to stray away...just do something huh?

I don't know what the 'correct' way of laying out a comic or graphic novel is, but I can tell you what I've done, and it worked for me once I finally made myself start. First I started with my base characters, and I did a sheet of rough sketches of each char in a wide variety of different poses, facial expressions, and most importantly for me, angles. (i.e. straight on, profile left and right, and what I use the most to simulate depth, 3/4 profile.) This got me comfortable with the chars and still gives me reference ideas. Then I'd do frame-by-frame written outlines of the dialogue, and a brief description of my intended poses for each frame. That let me shuffle things around to make sure there isn't too much crammed into one frame and decent flow of dialogue, which is a bigger issue for me than some because of the comedic focus of most of my stuff. THEN, with a clear mental plan of what I want each frame to look like I go ahead and pensil sketch. That's just what works for me. I think the best advice I can offer you, Vic, is to start small. I had visions of a graphic novel, and it overwhelmed me with the unknowns and potential time dedication. Not to mention inflamed my inferiority complex. Artisitcally, someone will always be better than you. But what you bring to the table is a unique story and perspective. Start off small so you can hone your skills to your own personal satisfaction. Set a reasonable goal so you can feel your progress and be encouraged by it. But most importantly...get started.

If you keep up on politics in the US, you might get this, I hope.

Thanks for the political comic, Glenn! I'd asked about trying them out here previously, but didn't really get a feel for people's reactions to that sort of thing. My husband compelled me to not risk the potential hate mail...we all know how personally some can take these things. But I have and still do want to dabble in it. I think it has the potential to express your understanding of a concept in a clever medium, which is perhaps easier to forgive. Yours, I have to say, I liked. Your way of looking at the situation amuses me. So thank you for having the guts to try it out. :) Also, I like the style. It's a very distinct use of grayscale, but not straight up newspaper commentary. Well done!

Thanks RedPeril. This was my first, and I must say, it was harder than I thought it would be --and it doesn't mean I don't like Obama. Cheers from a former resident of Athens. Take a walk in Monte Sano for me.

Hey Vicmonty, thanks for the link. That's a good one.
Hm, from my experience the script is always changed in one form or another when I actually get to the drawing. I aggree with Redperil to start off small.

Lol, Redperil, was that strip from real experience? :)

I had visions of a graphic novel, and it overwhelmed me with the unknowns and potential time dedication.

Oh yeah, that's true. It always looks so simple. You're wise being able to foresee the efforts involved.

If you keep up on politics in the US, you might get this, I hope.

Hey Glenn, I got it. I think you made the message clear enough even for people who don't follow US politics. It's funny, I liked it!

Yeah, politics can be a touchy subject. Bill Maher seems to be successful in mixing comedy and politics but of course he was moved to HBO.

Cheers Glenn. It's funny, I've been here a year and have yet to get onto that Mountian. I'm planning on it soon though.

Thanks App. And yeah, all of the strips I've put up here have been based on actual conversations, usually between my husband and I. I lack originality, but my life is at least entertaining. ;P
