it kind of a nerdy question, but i was wondering why maya's render engine suck so much in comparison to others (especially softimage and im not even referring to mental ray)?

dont get me wrong...maya is my favorite software, but whats the deal.

also, while on the subject, does anyone know where i can test out mental ray???

ok, sometimes the maya renderer seems to be a little bit strange. but most off the time i found a workaround the problem. but anyway it's not a very good renderer you're right. as i was on a roadshow a while ago here in germany the presentor told me that this is the only piece of maya that's not written by alias, if i remember right. and their focus for the image quality and what it looks like was on film and very clear renderings. that would explain the style maya images looks like i guess :)

with mental ray. there is probably no way to get a free from them to test. but i need to thank alias. the have sponsered my university two times (maya unlimited and real time author) in a very uncomplicated way.

probably and (i) hope so, mental ray will be the main renderer in the future, if it's really build in into maya. so let's pray to mekka that we've got that really soon. :bounce:

I agree too that it's not the most advanced renderer out there, but I think the "how good it is" also depens on where you use it. If we compare just standard renderers, would you choose 3D Studio MAX's renderer over Maya's? ;). I can't say anything about SoftImage 3D's renderer, as I haven't seen much stuff from it (SI 3D's renderer was what you were talking about when mentioning SoftImages render and not MR, right?)

Ofcourse if we look at the features list, it's not very high in the list, but I use it quite much for an example trough IPR and it really does it's job nicely.

And about testing stuff, I'm pretty sure you'll find a way if you really need to get in touch with MR *wink wink* ;)

thanks for the replies guys.
your right wt...i cant imagine having to be stuck with 3d max.

really the only thing wrong with mayas engine is the anti aliasing.
svenip, your right too about "just finding a way around the problem."
i cant see myself going out of my way to use a different render engine, but i was just really curiouse.

thanks again.

Well though a lot of people complain about Maya's render, I don't think it's fair to compare it one to one with Lightwave, Max or Mental ray. It really depends on what your doing.

For instance Lightwave/max, do not support micro-polygonal displacement, None of the other apps support paint effects which is part of Maya's render ability, and thought raytraced shadows are 'bloody' slow, you have more control over them than you do in almost any of the other apps. You also have more control in maya over the lights (properties) in general than you do in the other apps.

And this has been said before, but there are work arounds for almost ever gaff Maya's renderer has except for the speed in general, but to improve aliasing for instance you could increase the minimun samples to say 3 or 4, and the maximun to 7 or 8, which improves the render quality a lot. So give it some time, remeber that like almost part of maya, so time and research invested will yield immesurable results! :)
