View Full Version : Maya particle sphere - anyway to hack it to be a cube?
FluidEdge 04-29-2009, 12:53 PM As per question really. Is there any way to change the Sphere type into Cubes? Mel Script? Hack?
I know we could use a cube instanced on the particles, but the controls for particles are so much easier (colour, opacity etc) than for instanced objects.
cheers.

Open mental Ray Shader guide.
Click on geometry section.
Cube
Generates an axis-aligned unit cube with volume 1 centered on the origin.
mib_geo_cube
geometry "mib_geo_cube" ()
There are no parameters.

Nice idea.
I can't seem to get it to work though. Any tips?
I've just plugged the mib_geo_cube into the particle1 geometry shader in the mental ray tab, but it's npt working i don't think.
help appreciated.

No I do not think it is possible to change the Particle Sphere to a Particle Cube unless you do some instancing of an actual poly cube.

OK thanks.
It's a shame because there is a "Mental Ray --> Geometry Replacement" option within the particle1 node. I suppose that's just a standard option setting it doesn't mean it actually can work.
Never mind! We'll have to go with instancing and have less control over the colours/opacity.
