View Full Version : since when did "photoshop" become a verb?
singularity2006 07-15-2003, 07:38 AM Did anyone notice that a lot of people, including myself, use the word "photoshop" as a verb? Like:
"Oh, I photoshopped that picture."
"He got photoshopped out"
"She got photoshopped with 'enhancements."
etc etc etc...
shouldn't this be added into the OED now? =D

I dunno. I know what you're saying, but it still seems like a chunky word to use...we need a shorter slang word, which I have no idea what it would be???....
ex. Hey dude, did you hear Johnny got pshop'd outta that new ad cuz he was to tall?
...LOL...I dunno
Now you have me talking craziness singularity..heh
Seems to be slowly going the way Xerox (instead of photocopy)became the common word it is today, same as ski-doo (instead of snowmoblie), just to mention two.

So long as it makes scence. Besides, if thy said I changed this, i moified that, this over here i enhanced. Then the first thing that comes to the listeners mind is....."Photoshop?"
Other cases there is a confusion about if there is another software like photoshop that can compare.

I've been using "photoshop" as a verb long before I was using "google" as a verb.
"How did you find that?"
"I just Googled it real quick."
I remember reading that "google" is now an officially accepted verb. I can't imagine why "photoshop" isn't.
LOL. Imagine saying something like, "His acne was too nasty, so I 'Gimped' it out."

Personally I think it developed from people who are inexperienced and see photoshop as some sort of giant magical filter that is really easy to use. I have experienced this when I heard an advertising rep say over the phone to a client "it's ok, we can just photoshop it". As if she knew what she was talking about...

i think people started coining that term from hollywood morons. in the late 90s i heard that alot from like actress'. they dont know what photoshop is but they do know it got rid of there hang over. im not trying to even spoof on this , but i know it came from people in the entertainment industry, people who have no idea what photoshop is.

Okay, it might not be an official verb just yet. I did some quick googling and found a debackle:

How about slashdotted too? I was reading a science fiction short story compilation, and one of them, set in the future, made reference to the main character being "slashdotted" - though his virtual prescence is contained in his mind. If it's used in print enough, does that make the word acceptable for linguists to make it official? I think other slang, like "bling bling" has been added recently. Go figure.

The funny thing is, this is a bad thing (for Adobe). When a word becomes accepted as a "verb" (whatever. When it is referred to what it does instead of the product itself) they loose their copyright (on the name). That's why you always see companies list it as Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Windows.
I think people use it because it's less cumbersome to say "I digitally edited/manipulated/enhanced this image." I dunno if you guys find it annoying, but I say it all the time "I'll Photoshop that out." but usually when typing PS works fine (even though that could mean 100 other things like postscript)

You know what'll be bad for Adobe is when people start using the verb 'photoshop' with another app.
Awestruck Fan: "Wow fantastic illo!"
Joe Artist: "Oh yeah, I photoshopped it up in Corel!"

the only people who would say that are morons. i would like to here someone who has some high paying job say that. my friends boss is a big wig in society. but hes a moron, hes ideas are the worst he would be a great exp of someone saying that.
Well I have to say that I'm personally against this type of "verbs", they are shalow and miss represent the technics and all the work you really have to make to fix some things. There is a tendency nowdays that to reduce pretty complicated stuff to a single term, just for a stupid person could understand or a quickier way to say things.
The funny thing about this is that is cool to talk using this terms with CG people, but before you realise you will be talking that for your clients, under estimating your work and causing some terrible problems for the industry, and giving some extra cash and credits for Adobe.
Just my 2c!
See Ya!

maaan, that is all so madly funny... especially that letter from google to wordspy... We should talk to the folks of the OED to see if they'll add "googled" or "google." Yeah, those copyrights are a really funny thing to play w/ =)
And for the "I photoshopped in Corel..." lolrof! Can't wait to see that used in a corporate meeting ....

That's true!
But there are a lot of words like that that we use that aren't in "official". A few weeks ago (just because I was curious) I looked up the word "Rasterize". Not in the dictionary...nor on webster.com...
We should start a revolution!
