render -r mr -s 1 -e 50 -cam camera1 -proj /projectfolder -rd /projectfolder/images/ projectfolder/scene.mb

render with mentalray, from frame 1 till frame 50 camera1, from the specified project, into the specified folder, the scenefile.

is it that what you are looking for?

render -r mr -s 1 -e 1 -reg 0 100 0 100 -cam camera1 -im image -rd projectfolder/scene.mb

render with mental ray. frame 1. region X-direction pixel 0 to pixel 100 and Y-direction pixel 0 to pixel 100.

so basically it is rendering a chunk of your frame. i do this for high res images that will fatal error on me if i try to render them as one whole image. i just keep breaking it up into chunks until it doesnt crash.

the command above would render the red region of the attached image. (i think this is correct anyways, it has been a couple months since i have had to use this haha)

i think this covers your "parts of the image" question.
