View Full Version : Boolean problems please help.
Girn26 07-15-2003, 06:37 AM Ok, sometimes I will boolean an object from another object and it works fine. Next time I do it, It will get all messed up and polys will be missing and stuff. How do I fix this?? thx

The boolean operation in 3dsmax is pretty ****ed. Try to avoid boolean and use an other method to model your stuff.

Hi, I've encountered these problems as well.
The way I overcome these problems is that I decide what portion of my model will booleaned, and detach that part. Then I perform the boolean operation. After that, I re-attach and weld. The reason why I use this method is because the boolean operation works best on non-complex geometry.
Another thing you can do is to make a single mesh out of all the secondary booleanoperators, and perform one boolean.

The bigest boolean killer is skinny polygons, plan your pre-bolleaned pieces to ovoid these.
If you manage to get something to work, convert to poly and use STL Check modifier to make sure all's well, fix if you get errors, the next boolean will fail if there's errors.
If you get a failed boolean try moving the objects a fraction, this sometimes helps.
You could buy Powerbooleans, it's what Max should be like.

Max help says that Boolean doesn't work fine in complex polymeshes. It's necessary keep the complexity at minimum to use boolean and get nice results.
 keep on movin'!
