This is one of the paintings I created to explore inhabitants concepts for the story behind my Forlorn Hollow Matte, it was all included in my Matte painting final summative at my 3DA course.

I was going for warm colors to re-enforce the fact that this race is good, but tried to keep it eerie to give them that mysterious feeling.

I feel like I've gotten it to a stage where I could use some advice on how I could improve it more so any comments or critique would be most valuable.

Thanks :)

I love the dark eerie effect so far. The fog and light effects are strong. And the few elements you have highlighted work well for me. I don't know if its me, but I'm feeling a bit claustrophobic about the overall composition. I guess the boat running so close to the limbs that form a rough border. I was wondering how this would work as a smaller part of a much larger piece. This being the leftmost part, and maybe stretching the canvas out on the right side, revealing more of the swamp and perhaps some ruins or a cave maybe? Other then that I just think some areas need a bit more defining. Some of the trees fleshed out a bit more and maybe more detail on the boat. Good job so far!

I really like your suggestion of spreading the canvas out to right, I might give it a go over the weekend.

Thanks for your comments :)

I like the mood a lot, but I feel as though there's too much darkness. Maybe, the staff and little light sources (it's hard to see what they are) could give off more light so the viewer can see details better.

I definitely like the overall feeling of this.
On first glance, though, I felt I'm missing a few nice detailed strokes. A lot of the painting looks very blurry. So, a bit of detailing here and there to give it a bit more visual depth.
Still, this is lovely :D

Love the lighting. The front of the bow should be POPED. Bold colors and 100 clear with no blur or soft edges. From there the eye will go to the dude who I would like to see with strong highlights (Like you started) but mostly in shadow. Over all I think its important that the bow appear to be in your face.

Nice work!
