Please note: all help given must relate to Maya 2008

I have a diamond modeled in maya that was created as seperate shards and then merged together. But now I need to texture it so that it looks like a real diamond. An example can be found at http://www.reckittbenckiser.com/site/RKBR/UploadedResources/Finish_Diamond_Standard_Hi.jpg where the light is reflecting off the surface of the diamond as well as bouncing around inside. I understand the term that could be applied is here is 'caustics' but I don't know how i would get Maya to recreate something like this. I'd also feel a slight glow at the edges would help it even more if thats possible.

Secondly, I have a plane with an image on it of a dancer, which sits inside the diamond. So whatever texture is on the diamond I must be able to see inside it to see the dancer.

The person to be most helpful gets a virtual cookie =)

A diamond has no texture, it has a material with a proper ior value and dispersion to get those colorful rainbow effects you can see in that image. Caustics can sometimes be necessary but far from always for gemstones like that diamond. It's only if you wanna see the caustic patterns on a floor below or something. It's pretty cpu intensive tasks to calculate so it's safest to avoid that.

The ior value you need can you easily find if you google for it. The rest depends on what renderengine you plan on using so you have to figure that out for yourself or google some tutorials on the subject.

thanks that was of some help but i need more specifics like a tutorial of similar effects, and to do with maya =)

You're welcome :) sorry i'm not a Maya user myself (yet) so i can't give you all the help you need to get started. But i went on a trip with google to see what's out there on the net about disperion and gemstone rendering with mental ray for Maya and to be honest i could not find alot of helpful info. :( as many Maya and mental ray users as there are in the world one would think they shared their knowledge more. Anyways.. back on topic again, i found this which could help you.

You're welcome Rebecca, and apologies for my late reply. But better late than never.. :)
Great to hear that the link contained almost all the help you needed, which brings me to my next question. Have you got any results from all this info yet ? perhaps something you can show ? :) i hope all went well for you.

Keep me posted

Oh okies, i'm sure you can pull this one off somehow :) so i'm not worried. Plz post something after your deadline, i'd very much like to see your results. :)

dont know if you already got it working or not, but what you want to use is a dialectric material. with that you can set up the index of refraction to that of a real diamond. i think its like 2.417 or something. not sure, just look it up on a hyper physics web site or something. Once you have the material applied then you can begin messing with caustics and photons with your lights. :-D

Not a Maya user either, but here's a thread (http://forums.luxology.com/discussion/topic.aspx?id=34034&show=diamonds) in the Luxology forum that could help you. The way it's done in modo (and LW I think) is to use air polys, that is the same mesh copied over itself and flipped. How to texture it is explained here (http://www.vertexmonkey.com/presets_natural.php) - download the presets and read the pdf. Hope you can translate to Maya.
