Hi folks !
Here is the starting point of my new wip. This is a mutant cat for the same short movie for which i've done the mutant seagull.
This is the very beginning so all comments are welcome !

The "sticks" on his head will turn into tentacles at the time of the animation.

Highly disturbing.

I love it!

I'm very impressed and jealous of this. I would love to see a wire frame and for you to in detail tell me how you would go about starting to build something like this. I alwasy have idea's in my head but cannot apply them because I do not know where to start. A box model? or maybe a spline?

-please explain if you have time how you went about this!

So I see you've also been influenced by the latest "penis" trend in 3D models.

Or is that its tail?

Thank you shockeddesign. To make it simple, i start with a box that i subdivide (turned into subpatches 3 levels) and freeze to have my starting structure. After that turn it into supbatches again and start to extrude the "big masses". I use mainly bevel and Smoothshift and also the edgetools plugin from Dstorm for a finer control over the detailed zones.
As soon as i got my global structure i start to work on details trying to focus on one area after another keeping in mind the global look of the model that i try to achieve (it's important to make pauses just to look at the model under every angle). After that there is mainly a question of point move and poly tuning, i always try to limit the amount of tools i use as i'm a bit lazy and keeping in mind 10 shortcuts max is the best my brain can handle. :)
Just have a design and try to stick at it while i also like to improvise where needed if i feel that the result will be better this way.
Hope this helps.
I'll post a wireframe soon.

And, no chewey, this is a tail, sorry... ;)

out of n00by curiosity, how do you subpatch 3 levels?

Philours
07-15-2003, 01:33 AM
In the options panel (press "o") choose 3 for "patch division, convert your starting box by pressing the TAB key, then freeze it by pressing CTRL+"d".

Here is an update, i began to "mutant" him a bit more and detailed his head.

Just curious. What are those long pole thingies coming out of the back of its head? Is it a "pole cat"?

Looks like you'll need to add a bit more geometry to the joint locations if you plan on being able to animate it with decent looking deformations.

Philours
07-15-2003, 02:07 AM
The "poles" are tentacles that will float in the wind during the animated sequence where he will appear in (this is not a pole cat ;) ).
Concerning the geometry, you point it right and i'll work on it, thanks.

This confirms my belief that cats are inherently evil. Nice modeling, disturbing design. :argh:

And here is another update : i began to work on the small details of the head and added mustaches. I've also separated the different parts of his body.

Another update : i continued the work on his mustaches and eyelashes (spikes in fact) and made a quick vertex color test to find a decent color scheme for a mutant cat. :)
Please, let me know what you think :

Thank you Facial Deluxe.
I'll post a tutorial about the eyes on my website in few days (seems some people are interested in) even if there is no real big deal doing eyes, i wish i could do some of Pixar's stuff. :)
Anyway, here is another update : i've fine tuned some details on his head and finally chosen a color scheme for him, here is the start of the texture, please let me know what you think :

Hey Philours,

This is looking really cool. I love the coloring, although "some" of the stripes could use some more work.

The front paws are a little disconcerting to me, it looks like the left paw is on the right leg, and the right paw is on the left leg, because of the thumb like claw being on the outside instead of the inside of the paw.

Apart from that, keep it up, great work :applause:

Philours
07-17-2003, 01:44 AM
Thanks a lot Kretin ! Coming from you after seeing the quality of your work i must say that there is a true compliment.
Concerning the front paws, i must admit that i agree with you, this one scares me just being working at him. :) I think i will try to fix that tomorrow cause it's 3a.m here and i really need to go to bed now... :)

Philours

Here is an update : i've reworked the shape of the front paws, added some spikes on the soulders and fixed the texture on the paws.

Man, that thing is freaky! Nice job so far. :) If I had to crit, I'd say 1) the eyes aren't really working, IMO. They don't look like they're part of the creature...they just look like spheres stuck into the skull. Defining the eye socket more and having some folds of skin for the lids would probably help. And 2) the edges of the ears appear to be a little too sharp. I'd soften them up just a little so that there's not such a sharp crease there.

I like the fur...it's definitely got that mangy, back-alley, side-of-the-dumpster look to it. :D I think the DOF actually takes away from this image, though. I'd tone it down or lose it altogether.

Thanks for the comment TripleG, here is an update with some fix of the things you mentioned :

Thanks Triple G !
Here is an update : i've reworked the texture, the feet shape and added details to the legs.

How did you do those stripes?? and the eyes... Thats one scary, but cute cat you have there...5 stars from me...

The only thing that I see that stands out is that his nose looks a bit too much like plastic. Other than that, I'd say he's done! (I still don't quite get what those big protrusions are supposed to be on the back of his head, though...)

Nice job!

in all honesty i don't like those things
at the back of the head, but its a freaky
but nice animal.:)

Philours
07-21-2003, 01:46 PM
Thanks Nemoid !
The things at the back of his head are tentacles, they won't be no more rigid at the time of animation.
Here is an update, i've reworked the nails and the texture map :

I Really love those eyes too. You mentioned that you would write up a small tut on it. I am really intrested in it. I do think the textures do need a little work yet. But after looking at your seagull I am sure this cat is going to turn out great.

Thank you Tim.
The textures are not final and i still need to work on it, you are right !
Concerning the tutorial i've just post the first part of it (which isn't the most interesting so far) on my website : http://www.philours.com . Go to the "Goodies" section and you'll find it.
I am currently working on the second part, please allow me some time to finish it, i'll post here as soon as it will be finished !

Hey man, looking good. I think it needs the impression of, if not actual, short fur all over, where you haven't got the longer fur. But really nice work. Can you tell us more about the story you're planning with these guys?

Hello Philours,

Good job !

Why don't you give him some long teeth on each side of his
mouth ?

Thanks Kretin. Actually i've made a try with short fur all over and it dosen't looks good (looks like an ewok or something like this), the "plastic" look fits the cartoon style much better than the ewok style (at least for this character). I'll make a test directly on the texture map, maybe it will give the "impression of" :)
Concerning the story i can't tell too much as we are actually looking for a producer for it (here, in France, there is really something incredibly hard at this time) so we have to keep a "low profile" on this side of the project (yes the personal project is turning into a "commercial" one, but why not ? :) ). All i can say is that it will be an amusing treatment of nuclear experimentations in the south pacific. The seagull and the cat are just the starting point of more characters to come. :)

Hello !
Cause it's just a cat, not yet a tiger. ;)

Hey Philours,

I would like to know how you did the stripes on him? IF you used a vertex color technique how did you get the lines so well defined, and thin?? I ask because i'm doing a tiger, and i didn't want to have to UV map him just for the stripes... Awesome work once again.. And i like the protusions from the back of the head.. without them he's just a cat..

Philours
07-22-2003, 02:06 PM
Thanks Infinity3d4life !
The stripes are made with an UVmap... sorry. :)
Anyway, the UV is pretty simple as it's a side planar of the mesh, just make stripes for a side an if they are correctly placed they will stretch over his back and duplicate over the other side. The main problem with this technique is that you have to use pretty simple maps (no noise, no artefacts...) unless you will also see them stretch on the back of the mesh (which is certainly something you want to avoid).
Another technique that might work with vertex color (i love vertex color !) is well defining only the areas of the stripes by doing local flat wrinkles only at the place you want them to appear : just knife the areas where you want them to be localized and use FxWrinkle's plug to do it for instance (you can even just knife three time but you'll have to correctly weld the points for the subpatch geometry to work).
Hope it helps.

maybe i read this thread late but i think the tail could be longer (equal to the body of the cat at least).

the eye look to much human

My opinion :) of course

Philours
07-22-2003, 03:00 PM
I personnaly like the size of the tail as is. :)
But you are right for the eyes and i think i will rework the map as soon as i finish the second part of the tutorial of... the eyes. :)
Thanks for the comment !

The poly in the back of the head seems only extrude one time.
It's to simple for an atomic cat ;)

I like it all except the tenticals. It looks like the stripes were air brushed on. Think you need to blend them a little better by the edges or something. Also the tut looks great thank you very much fo giving us how to do your eyes. It is almoast how I do mine but you have a few tricks that I really like.
