how can i move elements within a scene, (such as spheres, cubes, planes) and make them explode when they colide with one another?

There are several ways of doing this. I would recommend using Reactor if you are a beginner as this will make it the easiest.
Reactor Tutorials (http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorials/3DS-MAX/Reactor/1)
I would start with any Rigid body related tutorials (mostly deal with physics and object interaction) and move on to Fracture tutorials (breaking objects using rigid body)

As you start getting more familiar with the different methods, you will most like start incorporating the different methods rather than using reactor alone.

If you don't want realistic physics or object interaction, you can just use this tutorial

its pretty basic and not realistic but its a great place to start
object explosion tutorial (http://www.tutorialized.com/view/tutorial/Object-Explosion/4388)
