for my animation project i constructed some engines and textured them. then i combined the pieces into a single engine object. however, in my hypergraph it shows that I have a polygonal object called "OdyMandrell_RightEngine" (which is the Right Engine for the character Ody Mandrell).... but I also have al the other components. I want to keep my hypergraph clean, so when I import the models to animate them, i have 3 objects per character, not hundreds of different nodes.

i.e. i want to change PolyCylinder01, PolyCylinder02, PolyCylinder03, etc. etc., into PolyShape1 and get rid of the others.

Try deleting history, if that doesn't clean it up then just clean out the hypergraph manually.

It keeps them as seperate objects in the hypgraph so if you made a mistake you can use the uncombine command later down the road.
