I modeled a basketball, i used a sphere with segments...
I used cut so i can make the black grooves within the ball and used extrude by -0.1 so I could make it indent a little bit.
when I was done I obviously had to use meshsmooth so I can smooth out the ball. when I did this the grooves were smooth the whole way except when they met each other... I am not home I am at work so i cants upply any pictures...

here is a little text art explaining what happens... hopefully u can understand

Thats what kind of happens when I mesh smooth the edges widen way too much and it looks retarted... If this isnt a good enough explanation I'll post some pictures later tonight... But does anyone have ahunch as to why this is happening... I really have a cool idea for a funny animation short I want to create I just need this to be fixed for now...

thanks

there are tons of threads about this -

either use different smoothing groups or add more cuts around the edges which are supposed to be sharp.

or you could just use a bump map and be done w/ it ...

^^Thanks for the response... however some of the threads I found regarding meshsmooth and the deforming of shapes really didnt help me much... while a few did, i am still having the problem... i guess it takes some trial and error research.

As for bump-mapping the basketball... I would like to because then I can move on with the rest of the video I am trying to put together...

Where can I find a basketball map? I've searched High and Low but could find only one with pretty bad quality... i tried making several but no luck...

you can chamfer the edge and 1-2 times and it will be more crisp when u mesh smooth!
