I have this can that I need to dent and crush and I'm a little newb when it comes to ncloth. How do you go about getting realistic can crumpling (other than switching to houdini) and setting the rigidity of the edges?

is it a dynamic crush. Like is a car gonna drive over it and u want it to get crushed, or u just want it crushed.

if its the first, I cant help you im just starting to learn nCloth
but if its the second use deformers and model it crushed.

hopefully im somewhat helpfull.

Theres an example of can settings in the help files, I think there may even be a preset in the nCloth menu itself in the AE.

I copied and pasted this from help docs...

Stretch Resistance: 133
Compression Resistance: 200
Bend Resistance: 17
Bend Angle Dropoff: 0.9
Restitution Angle: 6
Restitution Tension: 1000
Deform Resistance: 1.3
Damp: 1
Then you can use a passive nCloth and turn on Interactive playback, grab the passive and crush your can manually, all good fun.

The main settings are the restitution ones I believe, play around with those and you can have your can pop back into its original shape for example.

I just need it crushed realistically (bent and smushed) for a still so I don't need the animation. I tried it in Mudbox but there's no way to bend it how tin bends (with a fold and strict preservation of surface area and a tendency to fold).

Well I would try the nCloth settings and crush the can. At the end of the day is boils down to your mesh resolution which will determine the realism. If you are not happy with that, then forget nCloth and model something from a photograpgh.
