Guess they heard all that grumbling from mac users when 4 was announced.

nah, it was simply going to be announced, but people usually doesn't wait and complain immediately. if Pixologic had announced the 3.12B before 4.0, things would have been different, but guess what? someone would have complained however...

What exactly do you mean by "immediately"?
zBrush 3 for PC came out 2 years ago, and mac users are still waiting (until monday??? we'll see) for a working OS X version.

but zb for mac wasnt out 2 years ago so thats not a fully accurate statement. 3.12 is far from 3.1. its polygon crunching engine is MUCH better, handling textures per object, displacement per object, etc is a huge improvement from 3.1. but it does have its issues i agree, and i would have personally liked to see it earlier. but better late than never. i know that pixologic would trade in your license for a windows one if you felt that 3.12 was hindering your progress or with work until 3.12b was out. theyve always been nice to do this in the past so i dont see why they wouldnt now. and having windows installed isnt much of an issue really because if you make money off of 3d, $100 for windows isnt a big deal. you just end up not buying those few bluray discs for that year ;) or a few of your fave xbox games if your tight for cash.

zBrush 3 for Mac was released last october, 16 months or so after the Windows release, and we're still waiting for working displacement maps.
So I stand by what I said: mac users have been *very* patient.

Anyway, this discussion is getting us nowhere: zBrush is a very fine tool on the windows side, but potential Mac buyers have to be warned that they are going to be treated as second class citizens (at best), and that 1 year+ delays are common for Pixologic.

By the way, some people seem to find normal for software companies to get your money and say: "we're working hard on the product, you'll have it as soon as possible".
But how would those companies react if a customer said after having activated the product: "I'm working hard to earn the money I owe you, and I'll pay you as soon as I have it, but you'll hear nothing from me until then".

it brought nothing.

Maybe someone at Pixologic forgot to check their calendar.

Usually when they post something like this I always wonder which year they mean. But this time they actually typed in 2009.

But then again... who is surprised? :)

Lucky for them that they have a dedicated userbase, although a shrinking one, but still a dedicated userbase. It has kind of worked for Newtek, so I guess it will work for Pixologic as well.

it should bake out displacements ( both 16 and 32bit just fine ). Ive been testing it throughout the day yesterday and it worked in every case i thrown at it. smooth uv, linear, 32bit, 16 bit, single channel, 3 channel, normal maps worked, etc. there were a few bugs squished at the last second, so it was worth the wait i think.

its much more stable than the previous official release ( which i felt was way under tested ).

Really? Do you have anything to back this up with? The way I see it it's exactly the opposite, ZBrush becomes more and more prevalent. A vast majority of the posts I see here on cgtalk (and other 3d sites) that uses 3d sculpting relies on ZBrush, practically all commercial learning material I see in regards to 3d sculpting is aimed at ZBrush. So for me it seems clear that ZBrush is the big fish in the 3d sculpting pond and I've seen nothing to indicate that it is changing. I'm hoping for more competition in this field though, so if you have something that indicates Zbrush is losing ground to the competition then please share.

zbrush is the dominant sculpting application and growing.

Yeah I didn't even bother with the mud2009 upgrade (personal license). Neither did our studio this time around. When asked what the preference here was the artists unanimously replied 'zbrush'. I think the sales stats would be a lot lower than you might think for mudbox. it's a niche product and can only be used for one thing. Zbrush has a bigger user base partly because it isn't just a sculpting app. Yes, some people do value those 'non-essential' features.

Since some people here read my post about shrinking userbase I can only say what I see ( and I have been known to be wrong before ). At my work most of the zbrush users have switched over to Mudbox, and a lot of people I talk to seems to favor Mudbox before Zbrush. If that actually generates more sales or not I have no idea.

With that said, Zbrush is still the king and has tons of users more than Mudbox or any other of the sculpting applications. But... the other ones haven't been around for so long yet.

Anyhooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.................. this is about the Zbrush update. Sorry for steering up a storm in a small cup. I know mac users will be happy about it. Let's hope they stay on track with version 4.0.

all the best

I would like to know if displacement actually works now? (and other fixes too)

classic pixologic news release without ANY useful information at all. Change log anyone? There's limits to what mystique can achieve when it comes to marketing.

I also like the fact that on the zB forum there's six pages of people saying how wonderful the update is and how happy they are that all prayers have been answered followed by page 7 which is when the update actually got released!!! hooray for speculation and wishful thinking... and even then it's a bit unclear as to what the update actually covered.

I dunno, I feel a bit burned by pixologic and if it weren't for the genuine goodness of zB, mudbox would be a very easy choice.

yes. 16bit disp works
32bit disp works
normal mapping works

you got a bunch of options that were in multi displacer as well now, but in the core package.
