Finding Nemo was released in North America on May 30th. Not sure when release dates are over seas.

Amazingly interesting stuff. Thank you for bringing it to us.
It is quite nice to realize just how incredibly serious these guys are about researching... When something looks as good as this, it is only because they have done their homework beyond well, rather to the absurd: ---"studying sponges for a year"--- :D
Did anyone keep track of how many times they said "wrote some custom software"?
Pixar continues to prove that it all boils down to a serious scientific approach combined with almost rediculously solid planning and preproduction - and some really, really skilled CG-artists on top.

More articles of this caliber!! I especially enjoyed the images. I hadn't noticed all of the detail in the surfaces on Dory (I'm referring to the image of them at the surface near the Opera House) when I saw the film at my local "Gigaplex".
Nice job!

Its awesome that they had so many ppl talk about the project rather than one person. I hope to see future articles happen more like this.

I enjoyed the article as well but was a tad dissapointed that there was no mention of the score...
I realize that this is a CG forum but the audio really struck me at times. I didn't miss Randy Newman a bit.

Great article!
I especially like this one:
"I was the third person to work on this film, so I’ve been part of the technical process since the beginning, and still I found myself sitting in the theater thinking ‘How did they do this?’” - Ralph Eggleston (Production Designer)

I would have liked them to go into some more technical details. Modeling methods (nurbs/polys), lighting techniques (3-point or GI) and compositing layers. No high end studios ever talk about such things. :thumbsdow
I really liked the part where they talked about watching old impressionistic films like Bambi to find inspiration. Nemo actually reminded me of older Disney films in its style and execution.
I remember feeling sort of uneasy during parts of the film where Marlin and Dory were floating in a sort of dark void with no visible surroundings. It was a great effect.
Thanks for the interview guys, and thanks to Pixar for continuing to inspire us all.
agreenster- I have SUCH a crush on Pixar.
Me too;)

I read somewhere that the reason that many studios don't get into the nitty-gritty details is because of agreements with distributers and the like.
When computer graphics use was just starting to get started, lots of executives at big companies had, appearantly, the mistaken impression that even telling what software one used would be akin to the US Mint telling exaclty how the dollar bill is made and what materials are used.
Sometimes, it was agreements made with suppliers. For example, (I think I read this at ilmfan.com), SGI and ILM made the JEDI agreement that stated the two would work together by ILM useing SGI's hardware and advising SGI on how to improve it. Part of this deal involved only putting SGI in the limelight for the hardware. That's why ILM's 'rebel unit' using Macs never got much exposure.
Sorry to go off a bit, but maybe the reason Pixar doesn't get into the details that we would like to see is because of agreements with Disney.
Just my 2 cents.;)

So how much of that article was NOT taken from the DVD bonus features? As I was reading it sounded a lot like the extra commentary on the DVD second disc.
Great movie though. loved the other info. I want to know more about the modeling/anim/tex/and lighting. But the other stuff was great!
i've always wanted to know more about the "making-of"... thanks for posting this article :)
VERY nice article.
I'm going to go watch it again now... and pay closer attention to the technical aspect rather than the fun story/characters!!
P.S. Should there have been light in the whale's mouth? Total darkness would of been a lot easier to animate/render. :p :p
Edit: Oh dear, I think I dragged up an old thread. Lol. Well.. everyone read the article again! and watch the movie again!! :)
