View Full Version : Model::Prop::Earth Drill
slooper 07-14-2003, 07:23 AM I'm making a modeling demo reel from scratch and this concept is my first victim. Modeling is being done completely in Maya using NURBS and rendered in Renderman. Any suggestions or criticism would be greatly appreciated!

Excellent job here! I can see the attention to detail paying off!
How long have you been working on this particular model?
How about a wireframe?
I'm working on my first animated film with Maya 5.0 and it's interesting to see this particular piece of equiment. . .hmmmm. DO you have any background in mechanical engineering?
No crits, but I'm anxious to see the finished product.

I'm glad you like it! There are a lot of firsts going on here for me. First time modeling with NURBS. First time modeling a mechanical object. And first time using RenderMan. hehe
I started on this model last Monday. I've probably worked about 9 hours on it so far - but a lot of that time was spent reading tutorials etc, so I'm sure I'll be able to crank out my next model much faster.
No background in mech. engineering, although I'm flattered that you'd ask. My self-imposed deadline for the final model is the middle of next week, so expect to see it then!

my host machine went down - I'll reset the connection when I get home in a bit.
Sorry :( Just pretend it's still there and comment anyway ;)

is it hand held or giant? the handles suggest hand held but the design of the drill makes it look bigger.... i never mastered splines - your doing a good job!
 cheers

a few more modifications to the model and I'm trying out a toon shader...Since this is for a modeling demo reel, I'm thinking it might be nice to composite a radiosity pass under a toon outline pass. Thoughts?

blackwolf> thanks for your comments! :) I'm far from mastering slines, but I'm learning a lot. I used to be intimidated by NURBS, but they are very very powerful once you get into them.
I'm thinking this drill is very heavy but meant for one person to use. Although, it may be some sort of super-strong humanoid creature or something. My next project is to do a character, so I may do one that goes with this prop. Just really want to do something original... I dunno yet. It'll come to me.
I'm going to redo those grips too. They're too simple right now. Not enough detail and I'm going to move them outward a lot more; that'll make the drill look a bit more weildly.
