i have been messing with HDRI and for some reason, when i render, i get the image below. i cant understand what the jaggies are all over the paint. when i render a shot with the sampling set at 2x3 it still does it, just not as obvious. am i missing a setting in the render options that takes care of the jaggies? whats weird is it only does the weird shading like that on the paint material only. the material on the car is a "brazil car paint" mat, with some customized stuff, but i dont think the way the material is should matter. any help would be great guys! thanks!

- image is way too dark
- jpeg compression is killing it
- difficult to see, but looks like coplanar faces
- when you say sampling, do you mean shade rate or image rate?
- since you use car paint, you might want to seek official help

Hi slice56,

First thing, sorry my english. Now, have you try to increase the view rate and second rate (in sampling control) to something about 45-60? this is more important then the shade rate, you can leave it in -3/0. And you will need to set the contrast to something about 10/10/10 RGB, it's in shade rate too. I think this will work fine.

I think you should use:
min-samples:1
max-samples:2
because this is realy enough to get smooth eges

I would say the hdri image is the problem how did you included it into the scene?

My tip: put the HDRI image into the MaterialEditor and swich the the Mapping to Environ->SphericalEnvironment
and now put this map into the scene's environmentslot and use 'Instance' as method and the then out the map again with Instance into brazil's Skylight slot.

Now everything should look ok

The you've included, is really way too dark....
Maybe you haven't set up the HDRI in the I/O stage in the first place. When opening the HDR image click on setup in the file browserdialog, so you can set the log value, so all the color info of your HDRI file will be available.

About the "jaggies", this can be fixed with higher "View rate" and - since you're using a "car paint" shader with reflections, - and "Sec. rate". Maybe even 40- or 50 rays inthe View rate spinner. This is but a waste of calculations, so a quick and easy solution would be to blurr the HDRI image a bit with some external edittor. This way, smaller amount of rays will also produce seamless lightning throughout the scene.

Good Luck!

Here is a very quick setting for you..you can see the scene settings in these attachments..

you need to tweak the settings to get the quality..but you can catch the idea..

Using the same HDR image for reflections and for lighting is not really a good idea. The high-res image that you use for reflections causes grain and harsh contrast when used as diffuse lighting. You should look into:

a) using the diffuse/specular convolution options in HDRShop and saving out another file to use for the skylight (slower, more accurate)
b) blurring the image and saving out another file to use for the skylight (much faster, not as accurate)

You should also make it much smaller than the high-res image because you only need a small smooth image to get a decent diffuse approximation of the environment. Turning off filtering in the bitmap will also save time when rendering.

Here's a link to Debevec's explaination of the process:

ok,
I have tried this but it reflects the low rez small hdri into the car.
How do I light the scene withe the low rez without it reflecting?
Do I use the high rez only in the materials environment?
I'm confused.
please help....

cheers,
Steve

Drop your high-res HDRi in the 3ds max Environment Background.
Drop your low-res HDRi for lighting in the Brazil r/s Luma Server Skylight map slot.
Above the Skylight map slot, make sure "Use environment settings" is unchecked.

That should do the trick.

Thanks ZeBoxx,
that has done the trick.
thanks for your speedy reply too, really appreciate that.
