View Full Version : Placing Rivets Monday Movie
Mr-BlueSummers 04-20-2009, 07:51 PM Hey Everyone!
This week we're looking at how you can use the normal align tool, spacing tool, and array tool to put rivets onto your objects (http://www.mrbluesummers.com/?p=926). Enjoy!

Beginning of this year I ended up writing a Rivet placing tool to fill holes on models from my engineering department that had holes cut, but no rivets/fasteners. The approach I used was capping/filling the open holes and then using the elements of the object to get the average normal and element center. So not totally automated, but also prevented me from having to figure out the math behind trying to do hole detection on an already collapsed object.
Fun stuff, but I also ended up placing some 2,000 fasteners using it. So it saved me some serious time.

Pixel-M, if you plan on releasing the script I'd like to take a look at it. I was thinking on writing some sort of rivet tools myself, but it defeats the purpose if it's already done somewhere else. Max definitely needs rivet tools.
Great work BlueSummers.

Well it still has some bugs in the Ray casting I am using to place the tool on the surface. For some reason it is generating a 1.0 unit offset on the local axis of the Rivet. So I will need to figure out what is going on before releasing it. That and the code could probably use some clean up.
If you are going to write a tool, then do it. Maybe we can combine techniques/approaches for a better tool for everyone.
