is that a macross mech?
it also looks like the old transformers toy called jetfire (skyfire in the series)...
which i think was just a macross toy repackaged as a transformer anyway.
anyway... it looks good... as do all of the mechs in this thread.
curious... how long does it take you guys to do something like that? is it hard to do all of the little gears and pistons and stuff? what methods do you use to do that stuff? (subd's, nurbs, etc.)

Yes it is a veritech from the Robotech series.
To answer your other question:
Actually to me the pistons, gears and other nurnnies are the best part. It gives your model real character. And they are so easy to make. My best friend is the bevel tool.

some really old work,
schoolproject we created a mp game were you had a mech that could change in to 3 different forms.
the animations were the hardest part to let them change into each other. with only 300 polys

Well, i dont have a webspace up and running yet. Working on it though.
'
This is one simple concept i did a while ago. The driver is sitting in the back part with the top of the body and the legs are in the bulk of the machine. So the mecha is about 4 meters in height.
I know the dynamics might not really work, but it's an early concept :)
I am also working on a new image that will be a lot more detailed and nicer model overall.

actually.. the first guy looks kinda phallic when his doors are shut... he looks very similar to a vaccum tube from old tyme radios... hence the reason i have few renders with his doors closed.
The latest one (in orange) had ALOT more thought put into it. The guns tuck up and the doors close. I'll post some pics of the latest with his doors shut when i get a moment.
I still as of yet havent found a way to texture this guy in a way that makes me happy.... any suggestions?

Porcupine, your model looks neat, but the springs shouldn't go clockwise on one shin and counterclockwise on the other. They should go around the same direction on each.
LOL, yea, that thing looks like total crap because of the springs, bwhaha!!
;)
Porcupine, I also love the female character you placed on the ground plane for scale, very subtle detail.

JZA, I never said his model looked like crap. I just said that the springs were noticeable. It's typical to mirror halves when modeling, but some things shouldn't be mirrored.
If I didn't say it here, then someone might notice it on his demo reel someday and think that he's not detail oriented and pass him over for a job.
I thought I was helping out.
Kevin Grand
07-22-2003, 12:09 AM
Its looking alot better without the shader jack
webfox, I was only pulling your leg, you wrote that you liked the model initially, didn't you? It just seemed rather ironic to point out such a small element on such an incredibly detailed model... Btw, again, it seems rather funny to think of an employer going 'mmm, that spring isn't mirrored, nah, he's crap, we don't want him'! :)
However, please enlighten ignorant souls like myself, why would an mirrored spring not function? I agree immediately that in case of this model, it is simply mirrored, and not correctly oriented afterwards, but I don't think it would actually keep the leg from functioning.
But enough about the damn spring already! :)
webfox
07-22-2003, 12:35 AM
It's just a detail... but if you've ever repaired the suspension on a car, you'd see that all the springs are identical. The process of machining and building component parts are based on economics and simplicity of design. Screws wouldn't be threaded in reverse for the left side of objects anymore than springs would be built differently for one side or another.
When high-end companies look at someone's model designs, they look for things like this that say, either the modeler is just a wannabe art student with no mechanical design experience, or else they see someone with a real mechanical background who has artistic aspirations and can pull off their ideas.
And, besides, I've heard of people missing job opportunities on esoteric things like this before.

well this thread inspired me to clean up my latest mech.. posted a few pages back.
I reworked the feet to make him a bit more stablefooted.. and dulled up his shell. (im thinking of putting some bolts on him.. texturing him like a jet or helicopter would be assembled)

Here's a BIG one (1600 across) (http://www3.telus.net/avocado/random/TANKBLING1%20big.jpg)

I really like the modelling and lighting on your ED-209 blasphemy, but in the avi's, the walk cycle appears a bit weird - there doesn't seem to be enough weight there, it seems like he's planting his feet onto invisible cushions! With a few tweaks I think it could be truly awesome. Hope you don't mind my crits!

it isnt considered 100% finished, and never managed to finish a good environment for it. Itīs a bot meant to assist in the exploration of archeological sites. Normal Wheel or Chain-based Bots tend to get stuck...this one wont hehe
It was a school project and hence done with time-limitations in mind.
Oh yeah, itīs called the "Arac-o-Matic" and is manufactured and engineered by the fictive company "Aracology Inc."

actually it is completely rigged and there is several walking anims as well as a final spot for it...but i honestly dont dare to post those as the rig has some sever problems that is causeing minor feet sliding in certain circumstances...but mainly cause the environment consist only of a coloured floor and coloured obstacles....and looks damn bad hehehe

Very cool, Coolhillstone!
I love the design mix of an old steam crane and a mech. It's very original!

Amazing stuff everyone!
I wish I knew how to get those high quality renders... I like the untextured ones that look real.

Hi Folks
Cool work from all of you!!!
Wish I had more time to work with 3D.
Here are some Mechs I've done a couple of years ago...
http://www.3dpower.de/werke/image/mechtest.jpg
Since a few month I try to re-model them in Cinema 4D. The textured part is the new...

After I made the Dreadnaught tutorial about a year ago I got emails from users wanting to go a stage farther and build a complete mech rig, then rig it, animate it and render it. I made an 18 hour tutorial for Digit magazine over two CDs, however due to a policy change they only do one CD on the cover and even though this went for mastering it was canned at the last minute because of this policy.
Anyway, I am releasing this tutorial on my site as I promised soon. I know its not mega detailed, however I was not going to spend an hour explaining how to add greebling detail manually to a claw! If anyone knows a magazine that wants 18 hours of tutorial before it goes live let me know.

Since I am a mech lover and Zone of the enders Saga, I made this Mech(Orbital Frame) as my first 3D work
http://zoneoftheenders.no.sapo.pt/FA/Enxelcior/enxoodt.jpg
Here is an 360š rotation movie clip http://lbk.no.sapo.pt/Enxelcior.avi (http://lbk.no.sapo.pt/Enxelcior.avi)
I tryed to made this by making a cool combination:
Technology - Metatron Orbital Frame From Z.O.E
OutLine - Bahamut from Final Fantasy X
style - Hi-Nu Gundam ( I love this one )
I made it in the almost never used Corel Dream 3D
