Hello,

Trying out some new techniques with displacements and normal maps in max, and here's the result, character 2 (Character 1 thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=69712&highlight=jonas) )for my short film:

Comments and critiques please!

Cheers,

That's pretty awesome! I guess my only critique would be that a zombie normally looks more rotted. But maybe that's not the kind of zombie you're going for. Also the knees look a little off to me--something about the proportions.

Anyway, that will be a cool animation!

Any animations already? Please elaborate on the movie.

Excellent model. About the knees: as far as I know there really isn't an anatomy of Zombies book, which I imagine is quite handy in curcumstances where one desires an element of fantasy...

The only nitpicky thing I could think of is the lighting. It seems to come from two directions. From the right on the model and from the left on the wall behind him. Since the wall behind him gets a heavy lighting spot I wonder if the skin should not have a much larger eccentricity as well.. That being said, I could very well be wrong.

Come to think of it, he does not really strike me as evil, more like lost and undecisive.

That's a great piece of work! Really interesting and unusual design for a zombie :D
Those white eyes are truly creepy, really cool!

The only major problem I see with him is that he appears to be totally symmetrical - did you just model one half and then mirror it? If so, you should just tweak each side a little to break up the symmetry a little. Otherwise, the level of detail on his body and arms is really excellent - you did a great modelling job

I'd love to see a night time render of him :)

Thanks for the replies everyone!

the_zed_axis: There's some test images in my WIP section (http://www.subdivme.com/Wip.htm). I'll post some wires there soon.

Jake: The knees are actually anatomically (human) correct, however the trousers might make them look strange. And since that's cloth simulation it will look better when animated.

Leigh: Yes, I really need to break up the symmetry a bit.

Sheep Factory: No, his thumb is not going through the hilt... but yes, I looks like it does...

A brilliant piece of work, fantastic detail and great design in that grotesque, misshapen bodily form. The other images on your website are also exemplary in particular the human warriors. Very well done.

Very cool and old mannish. I like how his skin is saggy like a dead person. But too much colour on his skin for a zombie dont u think? He has like a tan.

Only a few "crits": The bricks in the lower right hand look fake-ish, the top of the pants look very CGI, and the lower abdominal area looks... drawn. There also seems to be a mapping issue with the chamfered portion of the left wall... or maybe im just seeing things. Also id suggest leveling his head out so we can see him better :)

But those are all very small things, for the most part this looks absolutely great

From what I can see, I really like the hands.

Great looking stuff!

BUT - should the shadow of the sword in his right hand be that long?
The light source seems to be coming from his left/front and that sword looks as if it is broken off...should the shadow be shorter?

Zombie ninja...cool.

holy crap,- you need to quit hoggin all the skill. there aint enought of that stuff to go around:annoyed:

k so just for my clarification,- a displacement map is just another name for a bump map, right? sorry I`m new to profesional 3d...:D

Great work! Of course a zombie can look like anything, but his neck looks really long. From where his clavicles and shoulders are up to the base of his neck is a really long distance. Just an observation. But, he's a zombie, but who knows what atrocities he's endured to become the wonderfully evil sword-wielding member of the undead that he is :)

Thanks everyone,

I've decided to make some drastic changes... the overall look will be the same, but more human.
The lower body won't change, just some more details on his shoes.
I've made some motion tests and I'll but some animations on my webpage (http://www.subdivme.com/Wip.htm) later today

Anyway, thanks for all your comments!

Cheers,

I really love this character, I'm not going to even comment on the lighting as you know how I feel about that, but the disp. maps are amazing, can you post the wireframe and the disp. map so we can see how much it affected the base mesh?

whoa, back from vacation and look at all the great stuff people have been doing, displacement maps seems to all the rage right now, and I must say I like yours better than those showing off the zbrush technique, as they were to overused and looking splodgy, while yours actually define a muscle flow. they still look a bit sharp here and there though, but that may be a lighting/rederer thing as the face render on your homepage shows no sign of that. it definately looks like it's a new technique soon to become de facto standard. on a artistic note, great characterization on your zombie, altough I prefered the white eyesocket thing from the first shot as to compared with the actual eyes on the last one, looks much scarier. those teeths are really ghastly, excellent work in a erhm... disgusting way... stay away... stay awaaaaaay....
