The best way to learn to draw out of your head is to combine anatomy study with life drawing. One teaches you the structure and shape of muscles, bones...etc and how they interact, and the other teaches you how these structural studies actually apply to real life, and how humans really look when you add body fat and skin over those muscles and bones.

There are anatomy resources online you can google, and there are also books you can buy (try amazon.com). For life drawing, you can try to draw family and friends, and if you can't get people to pose for you, you can draw yourself in the mirror, and also try practicing from photos (although photos can have distortions so be mindful of that). Keep in mind that you also need to study how figures balance and distribute the weight of the body in various poses--that's what will allow you to draw natural looking poses. You also need to study clothing folds, as we rarely draw totally naked people. Learn about stress points and compression points that causes the folds. There are also books on wrinkles and folds--just search amazon.com

Also check the sticky threads at the top of this forum--there are some links to specific websites and suggestion for books that can help you.

Hi Sam,

When you want to be able to draw a form from imagination, be it a phone, a vase, a tree, a box, a human or anything at all, you need to understand the form well and a certain amount of "reference" should be in your longterm memory.

If you make one sketch of a car in your street, you will not have learned the forms of it thoroughly enough to be able to reproduce it accurately from a different angle without reference at a later time.

If you draw that same car a 1000 times from as many different angles and under as many different lighting conditions as possible, you will have a much better understanding of the forms of that car, and drawing it from imagination will be much easier.

Our head is a database, we need to fill it with as much reference as we can.
There is only one way to do that.... by drawing/painting that reference.
As you can guess, it takes many years to get a large database in our head.
The great thing about it is that it is fun to study everything around us... :)
