In the general forums they have that thread on a fur pipeline. I havent used shave and a hair cut, and my only dealing with maya fur and hair has been for some fiddling around stills tests(learning how to use it- no rendered animation with it).
In one case I took paint fx hair and converted to polygons and rendered that out. Looked ok to me.

If someone doesnt have a fur covered character, but just patches, say eyebrows or little bits on the scalp that dont really move, would the default maya fur and hair be suitable for an animation scene or would it be a waste of time and just better to use shave or some other add on?

Crickets.

I knew I should have put this in the general maya section.

You can get Maya's fur/hair system to look pretty good. You have to play around with it though. I usually get better results with Maya fur with the Maya software renderer. However I do prefer shave and a haircut if it is available as mental ray is IMHO a far superior renderer.

Make sure that you create a second set of UV's for the areas that you wish to make fur on. Maya fur creates texture maps for its attributes so you want to make sure the UVs are layed out properly and give them as much texture resolution as possible. You dont want to paint fur onto the chin and have it come out of the nose =)
