View Full Version : Character: Rockclimbing Hands
Phugative 07-13-2003, 06:17 AM Completed with Maya 4.5 and textures in photoshop 7. Rendered with Maya default renderer.
This piece started as a study in skin and anatomy, its based after my own hands. I am a rockclimber and often go night bouldering with just a lantern, so this image was inspired by that. Crits and comments welcome.

ok, since no one else has replied yet, I will, this is an awesome piece, not only for the level of detail in the anatomy, but in the composition. It reminds me of the masterpiece studies by da Vinci, that almost rennaissance quality with the lighting and the realism. Excellent job here, no crits really, amazing piece of ART, not just 3d.

I would love to reply, but there are no pictures to look at.........
Please check your link, cause it sounds good.
3dbuzz.com does better picture hosting. Its free. Only problem is there is a limited number of pics (9) per registered user, and you cant post the images directly in the thread.

If you past the links into the browser it works fine. Great work dude, the lighting adds a lot to the piece.
Reminded me just how painful climbing is... Fingertaped to the max and chalk in the raw spots, nice.
Really nice bump and texture mapping. The suspended chalk particles add a lot to the atmosphere. You might want to work on the skin shader though, the skin looks a bit solid at the moment.

I have to agree, this is very much a nice piece of art. It's gorgeous. There are just a few tiny little flaws..
Yes, the skin looks too solid. That's been covered.
The nails should probably have somewhat more chalk on them, and perhaps more of a random tip to them (they're all very well manicured.)
And finally, the bandages look a little off, esp. the one on the topmost hand. It could be the dof messing with things, but it looks very very flat. If it's just texture, it should probably be extruded out.
I think that's it. Awesome work. Keep it up.
Cheers,

i agree with these guys. great image, the only flaws lie in the skin shader, which is just slightly off.

Thanks for all the great crits guys!
I agree with the skin shader, oddly it looks better in brighter lighting, but I am trying to make a new/better shader now. Also I think the chalk layer kills any of the specular pops and red translucence glow i used to have in the shader.
Other crits are great too. Fixing then reposting when I have some spare time. thanks again for the comments!

Links not working for me either, you've apparently exceeded your limit.
I run a 3D art site as well, you can upload them there if you like, up to 512Kb max, and I have no restrictions on linking.
You do have to become a member, but it's free & quick.

The wire frame looked great, wish I could see the other versions!
