As the most agreed about the topic, here's smc05 - electronic gadgets!

I can't phrase it better than Tyler 'Digitool' already did, so here's the deal:
Things exist in a wide variety of difficulties, from cell phones to laptops, to gaming consoles to remote controls. Someone can pick something that kind of tailors to their style and experience level.

I started with a timeframe of 100min, but didn't have the time to add tiny details like text and screws. :(

very impressive in 100 min. probably much more than I could have done haha. I'll give this a shot, hopefull, I'm going to take a break from research writing for a class and I think some modeling would be just what I need about right now.

Hey, my first time participating in a challange. Made a nokia headset that was on my desk, took about 60 mins to model, but probably used half an hour ekstra to render out and composite in PS. Hope I got the rules right and that I'm posting in the correct place (Sorry in advance if I'm not:))

Welcome aboard Joakim. Your image could be doubled in size, that'd make it easier to see the work you put in there. From what I can see, it looks really good for 60min!

Imo rendering/compositing isn't considered in the timeframe, so 100 min for modeling only. How much time you spend to present your work is up to you. Otherwise I'd be at 140min at least :D

I brought my pc to my home this weekend, so it will be a lot easier to participate.

Thank you Stephen! I think it's fine to create more than one entry, looks like more people participating. I think 3dTotal and Game-Artist.net allows that too.

I wanted to try out a screen capturing tool, so I gave it another shot. Unfortunately I was slightly distracted and didn't finish in time...so the "B" and power buttons of the control didn't make it. :hmm:

Hello, this is my first challenge as well. This is my cell phone, although I knew it wouldn't be able to finish it, I thought I'd give it a try anyway.This is far from done, buy I did as much as I could within the time frame. It took me 1,5 hour just to do that, 'coz I always get lost when it comes to tiny bits and nurbs. :shrug:

Great to see another entry!

What software did you use SkepticMantis (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=369517)? If you're using 3dsMax, you'd be much faster using poly modeling + alot of copy/paste for all the buttons. :)

Yes, 3d max 9. Editable poly with symmetry and a meshsmooth on top. thatīs what most people use, isn't it? And if by copy/paste you mean the shift+drag, didn't do it that way... (max doesn't really have a copy/paste, does it?) just divided with some more lines, detached the quads and adjusted them all at once.

the biggest problem are on the edges of the buttons, because when I detach, they come out different from the whole they're in. sometimes there are little gaps that i need to fix. The other problem is the bottom of the socket the little ball is in (near the keyboard). I just couldn't get it round..

Sometimes NURMS are counter-productive, coz you have to make many divisions just to make a sharp edge (that don't need any at all).

Do you mean NURMS (Non-Uniform Rational MeshSmooth) or NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline)?

Guess I was wrong, tought you've build the thing using NURBS curves. ^^ Well yea, creating all those loops to keep the sharp edges sharp, is quite a pain.

I did a dvd player. I'm not sure if it counts as an electronic gadget but... anyway, it was fun doing it. I wanted to make the inside part of the dvd tray, but i was not sure if i could finish it on time.

Count me in :D, ill model my phone :D

Modeling and texturing about 90 minutes.

Took along time to render, had some issues. Hope it still counts.

Keep in mind because of rendering issues, i could only manage one render of textured view. The poly count was way to high. 250K :\

For my first time UV mapping in maya (just learnt today) im happy with the outcome, although it is very ametuer.

Nice work SKeller, looking good! I'd resolve some of the loops you've created to keep the hard edges. If you have more curved elements in your model, it can save a lot of stress/time to retain them smooth. :)

dreadfear, texturing/rendering time doesn't count, the timeframe is for modeling only (imo). Good work tho, you've got a nice level of detail in there.

Whats up for the next comp.? Anyone got ideas for that? Some suggestions from the

thanks zortech! Sometimes i get lost with all those loops running around my model to make the hard edges. These challenges are helping me understand them a little better. I hope i can have more control over edge loops soon.


Whats up for the next comp.? Anyone got ideas for that? Some suggestions from the

I vote for wild wild west. We can make some cool environments or even vehicles with this theme.

As a D&D player, I'd definitely go for non-explosive weapons (or white weapons (http://www.chillnite.com/wtf-what-are-white-weapons), as we call them here). The only requirement is that it has to be a weapon thatīs not based on explosion. I've always found them way more fascinating and interesting than firearms.

I'd add that they do not have to be medieval (or pre-gun powder) necessarily. So anything from a modern competition bow with all those pulleys, to a catapult or an axe would be acceptable. As long as it does not require gun powder. Then we'd do the firearms some next time.

Thatīs my vote.

well, this its my first participation so i decide to start whit something simple: the new wacom intuos 4 tablet, before i smoothed the model has 2996 polys, with the smooth has 35352polys, i spent between 45 and 60 minutes modelling and like 15 minutes seting the scene, rendering and compositing

Jeepster, good work for only 25 minutes. Is that a rendering from an isometric view? The proportions appear slightly confusing.

Mechanical weapons sounds cool.
But, err... What exactly are considered mechanical weapons? From what i understand, mellee weapons like swords, knifes, staffs and all those rpg combat stuff are not mechanical, so we have to make firearms?

I feel pretty lame for promoting the speed challenges and only making entries in like 2 or 3. Again, I'm going through finals right now in college so my attention is elsewhere, and leading up to this I've had to work on countless projects and papers so that explains the lack of participation.

On the other side of that coin, I LOVE to see you guys continuing and sharing the different aspects of creating the challenges. I'm def. due to join in as soon as I can.

and a side note, I tried an English beer today called Hobgoblin. It's my new fav. beer, but the closest I can get it is 2hrs away from me unless I can convince the locals to order some.

As for the timeframe, well, it wasn't really specified. :)

Now what about the next one? I see Skellers point, but I think both topics could be separate challenges.

Melee weapons + staffs or mechanical weapons? We can also open the thread already and include a vote, then start when it's decided. ^^

I know it is not for the challenge but being "electronics" I figured I'd show you something...

today, since this is my finals week and I needed a break from studying, I started on a summer project. I'm going to model all the instruments and band members in my band and hopefully get a friend of mine to rig them.

anyway, I was thinking (well, I can get back into maya and get ready for some challenges coming up the next month or so) and well by starting on this project, I am kind of warming myself back up to participate in challenges. But this here is just kind of a little show-off if you will, because although I spent 90 minutes on the modeling, it's not finished and therefore wouldn't be something i'd submit, but being electronics thought i'd use the oportunity to say whats going on and whatnot....

This is a Schecter Hellfire Avenger. It is not mine, though. I play the drums, which is going to be the next model once this one is finished. I have a project running for over the summer, I want to model our instruments and members of the band and try to have someone rig them for me and pose them for like band posters / website stuff... a friend suggested making a music video in 3d with it haha. We'll see lol.

Thanks again, I was actually pretty suprised how this came out so far, I'm a huge fan of music and would like to see your guitar once you get modeling (cus you will, RIGHT NOW! haha... actually I think you should do it, it's been a fun experience)

That's a great idea! A 3d music video would be an awesome project. I wish everything goes fine with your 3d band.

I will certainly model my guitar, i have some assignments to finish, but i'll try to start it in the next weeks.

that looks really awesome man you did a good job in it.

It's going to be quite the big task but I hope to make some ground on it, I just finished my last final exam today for this semester. Man I wish I would have finished school the first time around those years ago, but I ran outa money and well, a lot of stuff happend on my end and the universities end, so here I am, back in school, for a different degree haha.

I've got just a few more things to model on the guitar which I'll tackle tonight after work hopefully, then texturing! yay, I'd rather rig than texture haha. Anyone want to texture it for free for me? you know, a little friendly gift? LOL!!!

seroiusly though, I'm going to have to make my own thread for this thing in the wips cus I hate jacking this thread for my band equip.

:applause: Great job an fantastic idea! Sure is fun to model instuments. Since you guys are going for the eletric, i think i'll do my bass guitar, just for variety.. :buttrock: I wont do it for the chalenge either, coz im sure it'll take more than 3 hours.

Guess i'll do it sometime next week, Im busy finishing my website. I'm not that familiar with flash, and its taking way longer than i expected.

By the way, is there a simple way to distribute the frets along the neck? We can do it by the "rule of 18", dividing the (rest of the) string by 18 to determine the next fret.

I just duplicated my fret and used my reference image to place it. LOL it was pretty simple for me, no math, I hate math... haha

well... I'm nearing completion with the guitar. I need to tidy up the textures, they're sloppy right now, and I need like... 2 minor things to model, things that aren't seen 99% of the time, so they're last priority... here's my update
