View Full Version : transparency masks in PS
JasonA 07-13-2003, 04:13 AM Hi folks,
can someone give me the run down on how you setup an alpha channel for transparency in photoshop? The situation is pretty straighforward but I can't figure out how to get it handled.
I have a tiff image with an alpha channel. I want to add this image to another composition using the alpha channel for the layer transparency in the new composition so I can composite the new pic in nicely. I can't figure out how to get the mask in and setup tho. Can someone reveal the procedure to me? Thanks in advance

With your image open, goto the layers pallete and click on the channels tab. There should be RGB, R, G, B and Alpha1 or something similar. Ctrl + left click on the alpha channel to load the selection. Use this selection to copy and paste your image into your new document. that should do it.

For a little more control and versatility, i'd suggest this...
Bring the tiff image into the other document. Arrange it in the layer palette where ever it needs to be.
Then within the channels palette, select ALL on the alpha you want to use. Copy the alpha channel.
Return to the tiff layer and click the "Add Layer Mask" icon on the bottom of the palette. Then Paste the channel into the mask.
Now you have complete control over what is visible and not for the tiff image, but without having to directly alter/edit the original image.

jason i belive this way is faster.
click your alpha channel, then click on the load channel as selection.
then on a blank layer, or the color layer, hit the mask button. if you do this on a layer with no color, you just get your mask. i think its pretty fast. its just 3 clicks.

Levitateme: What would be the point of creating a blank layer with only a mask? From memory you can't paste into a layer with an existing mask anyway... or can you?

Ian, I think you can as long as the layer is blank. I'm pretty sure.
Just checked and apparently not.
Personally, I would load the selection, add it as a mask, then drag-n-drop the whole sha-bang into the other document.

hey ian good point and...
"then on a blank layer, or the color layer" i guess no one is actually trying this technique, pasting into another image? i dont see why you need to when its already in your image. what i said is not difficult its 3 clicks of the button. and pasting a mask onto another mask. no you can only have 1 mask per layer, but you could in your alpha channels do this technique but then shift select so you have both layer masks. then it would work if you already have a mask and are trying to add to a new mask.
