View Full Version : Character: Aranik Kayem, Kida'rin Guardian
CGTone 07-13-2003, 02:20 AM Greetings all,
I'd like to submit a recent character design of mine for feedback. I'm still just starting to get back into illustration after quite a lull, so I'd be very pleased to hear any comments and critique you folks might have.
This image was hand-drawn and inked - then scanned into Photoshop where I colored it with the mouse. It took maybe 10 hours total.
If anyone's interested, more narrative background on this character can be found at the following section of my website:

I embedded a small version below, and you'll also find a link to the larger one.
Thanks!

 "bump"
Please forgive the bump - just want to make one more pass through the ranks and see if I can get some feedback.
Thanks!

Well, i must say i was quite confused by the small 'preview' pic you attached in your first post. But i decided to check the larger view and i realised, it's a dog! lol!
now for some critique...
I like the way you've portrayed him. i read the background of him, and i think you've captured him well. from the picture i get the feeling that he longs for somthing, yet he has determination to get through the current situation as well as can be.
though i don't like his eyebrows. and the face and body of him is too human like for my tastes. his face is almost confusing because you can't tell he's a dog clearly untill the muzzle/mouth/wutever it's called. i think the hands would look better if they had a bit more 'paw' to them. as you've depicted them his hands look just like a humans.
i like the colors, plain and simple. looks like somthing someone would wear if they wanted to just blend in with the little peoples.
i'm quite interested in your project now, and i hope to see good things. the story is interesting as well. am i correct in asuming it will be cartoonish animation using flash? or do you plan on making it fully 3D?
can't wait to see it! :wip:

A "dog"? Not at all - he's a "Bandarin" ...big difference ;)

Thank you - I'm glad you picked up some emotion from the drawing. That's what I always hope for.

The structure and anatomy of these creatures is still evolving. I've put a lot of thought into some of the issues you mentioned. I've experimented before with different kinds of hands, legs, and feet. One of my primary concerns was that their species is highly advanced in terms of intellect, language, technology, etc. As a result, they sort of need to have certain basic "human-like" characteristics (like dexterous hands with opposible thumbs to manipulate tools, technology, medicine, etc...).
I do definitely want to detach them from the human form to as great an extent as possible, but I've never liked any of the experiments I did in the past. But I still need to study more human and canine anatomy before I get into the details. Once I become better at drawing the needed elements, I'm hoping to come up with something a little better - something more canine perhaps, but maintaining a look of higher intelligence (in the eyes especially) and a mouth structure capable of complex speech.

I would love to work with an aesthetic of hand-drawn animation blended with computer animation. However, I don't think I have the patience and passion for drawing to pull this off (as a one-man project!). So I plan to move the story and characters into 3D animation (which I still have a lot to learn about). Naturally, I chose to work with furry creatures which should be... interesting... :hmm:
I'm hoping to start my first short film for this story later in the summer.
Thanks,

Hehe, not a dog? my mistake. ;)
About the hands, i was thinking somthing along the lines of...hands. keep them as they are, but give them some 'paw' like features. such as the spongy yet rough surface on the bottom of the paws instead of the rough skin on human hands. the nails would also have more of that animal shape, yet grow more similar to a humans. I gathered form the pictures and story that they are a very intelligent and evolved race, so i can understand completely the need for a human form. we are after all, the best 'tool' ever made. mmm hands..so usefull. :D ahh, i wish i could still draw to better show you what i meant about the hands. but i hope you get the idea.
And i'm glad to hear you will be doing it in full 3D. i like traditional animation, but somthing about 3D just hits me in the soft spot.
BTW i -love- that Ninja Tsuki character concept picture. do you have it in a larger size? it would look so great on my desktop.

I have thought a bit about the hands in the past. I had imagined that there should be some kind of non-fur substance on their palms to aid in handling objects and manipulating small technology--sort of like what you're referring to, but it would have to be very flexible for fine manipulation.
I also thought about their nails/claws. I pictured their claws being very rugged and sharp naturally (a natural defense they evolved with, like many animals). But most Bandarins keep their nails short (and less dangerous!) as they have evolved to use them more as tools, and less as weapons. Though I also pictured them leaving one or two of them longer since it can be helpful as a cutting or prying tool. And certainly, one could grow them long and sharp as a natural weapon.
They still have a ways to go, but I'm getting there
Thanks,
