Im trying to determind some solid foundations for setting up skin. I know this is a complexed thing, and have been doing this for over a year trying to achive the ultimate render of skin. In order to help I need to set some rules as to the order in which things should get setup.
At the moment im getting the character in the scene, there is no background geometry, but just lights which are based of a Key from a distant or area light, the fill another area light, and rim, a distant light from the back.
I know iv got to get the correct ballance, but im not juggling with 3 balls here, its more like 20 or more. I dont thing this should be as hit and miss as im having to do things.
So to start with I need to know in what order should a CG scene get setup? At the moment im doing things in this order.
Scene:
backdrop gemoetry, light placment Key, fill and rim. HDR for reflection and some GI.
Character:
Bring in the character and apply Bump and displacment. Setup spec amount with a spec map, and size of specular area which in this case is named (Roughtness)
Apply the difuse colour map, and set the Gama to 0.6.
-------------------------
Settings!
Now here is the hard bit, how much diffuse amount gets applied overal, and how much SSS amount, gets applied to the difuse percentage? What intensity or colour tone should the Subdermal map be painted, im picking randomly between a rich red and orange. How much front as to back scattering get applied, is there any set rules, or is it just what im doing now, messing with settings for hours on end.
I dont have a slot for seperate Subdermal, epidermal maps, or do I have control independantly over front and back scatter, I can only move between the front or back.
-------------------------
For the average while male or female, what is the correct skin tone at its base colour. The shadows apear to be a brownish pink tint, I asume this comes from the correct SSS shader. I could just use a photo to make a texture map, but I want to determind what makes these tones, and how I can simulate them in Modo.
If I where to sum up the skin from my perspective, id say its a slight wax, translucent glow that alows the subdermal blotches and pigments show. The veins are just visable. The yellow tint must be from the Fat layer.
Any help from somone that knows about any of the above is most welcome and apreciated. I know this subject is a not black n white, but very complexed, I just need to break it down a little.
Thanks.
