Hello,

This topic has been discussed a couple times on this forum, but all of the posts are pretty old and didn't seem to lead anywhere.

I am trying to create a sun that looks much like some of the filtered images of the sun from NASA.

My goal is to have the solar flares animate like in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5zdP-VNyFc&feature=related) with the overall sun looking like this (http://h4xr.org/nfzc).

I found a great walkthrough here (http://www.3d-palace.com/xenomorphic/education/doc_sun2.htm) that even comes with a project file, but that is for Max.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Keith

You wont find a public tutorial on making a realistic sun. However you can buy pete draper (the guy you linked there)'s books, he has a tutorial in there. I made one, not using his tutorial but using my own methods to create a very realistic sun.

Now, you'll have a hard time making solar flares correctly in most other 3d apps. Max makes them well because of it's node based particle system known as Particle Flow (pflow).

I recently did one for an upcoming low budget short, in maya that I modeled after this image

sunflare (http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/228174main_image_1087_946-710.jpg)

I only did two small flares but the main surface texture ended up being accomplished with about 4 layers of static textured fluid , and a couple of multi layered noise textures all kissed together in comp.

I only did 2 flares, but used a curve emitter and rendered a LOT of particle tubes to ge the look kinda plasma-like.

It came out pretty good. I'll post pics and stuff on my site later this month, when I get it re-done
