Anyone got any ideas how the ink/smokey trails coming off the characters/objects in beginning and middle of this video was achieved?

I have some ideas of how it might of been done, and I do know 3DS Max and Houdini were used, however, I am kinda limited to using Maya for now. Any suggestions would help, thanks!

don't even think about it to have that kind of effect easily in Maya. My suggestion is that use Krakatoa in 3Dsmax. I know it sounds lame that I am a Maya user but suggest people to use other application. But in this case, I don't think of anything else =.=

I would think you could do that sort of thing with fluids couldn't you? I'm no expert, but can you just use an object as an emitter and some maps for where you want things to emit? Then possibly some PP attributes to control the "ink/smoke"? I would think this would be very doable in maya, or max, or blender for that matter, I really don't care what software you use, there's going to be a lot of R&D on your end to get the look right obviously, but it should be doable in most programs I think.

That black and white bit in the middle? you could get some decent results with a few 2d fluids layered up.

you dont need max, this is maya fluids 101. also you could use Binary Alchemy particle volume shader. but the out of the box solution is fluids.

I know we could archive that kind of effect with maya fluid. But give us something a litte more specific? one word fluid or think won't help anything. When I first posted in this topic, my idea was to drive particles with fluid container as a field. But twisting it to make it look more interesting is DAMNNN ~.~ I still don't get that effect.

anyways, look at CGtalk FX war winner this month did with fumefx in Max.
