I really want to find out how weapons fire is done. I have modeled some ships and some asteroids, now they need some gun fire.

I don't even know how to start.

I want to do something that looks like this:

I am trying to implement this in my game engine and decided to play with it in Maya to see if I could even get the effect using the particle system. Then I could take the particle rules and move them over to the engine.

Any ideas?

Do you think they are using particles?
Do you think thier particles are billboarded spheres or?
What kind of textures do you think they are using?
What kind of rules would you make for the particles?

I am not even sure if it is traditional, because the projectiles have a differant shape to them depending what angle you are looking at it. They are long from the side like a comet, spherical from the front. I don't know where to begin doing this.

If anyone has any resources on how to do this in a 3d modeler or programming wise, anything at all please link it.

I've poored through all 14 of my graphics programming books and been googling for a week to no avail.

The 1st thing that come in my mind when I saw that torpedo like things from star trek xD is a sphere instancer with blin material ( or other I'm no good with shading stuff xD ) on it and lots of glow intensity and after that emit particles from the particles and if you use nParticles you can easy(probably xD) do that nice tail thing with Radius Scale graph so when the particles get old they get smaller xD.
Dont have time right now to try it if you want you can try it :>.
Hope this will help you :>.
BTW now that I think of it there was bug in maya 2009 nParticles that make them look like sphere at the beggining :>(probably they already correct that, but I still ahve it xD ).
GL with your game tho :>.
