Frescalus 07-12-2003, 03:28 AM the sword is called the sword of the dragon lord (hence the design ;)
any crits would be welcome! I'm using 3d studio max 5.1 with brazil r/s and afterburn plug ins
I'm currently rendering an updated scene which I will post hopefully soon. Sorry I didn't give much detail yet heheh...

A close up of the sword might be nice ;) . Is something written on the blade?
well.. you can start by fixing the following few things..
the water should be reflecting the dark sky.. it's too light the way it is.. should be much darker..
not sure what the fog looking stuff on top of the water is.. and why is it green? or is that grass? i can't tell.
is that supposed to be a mountain range in the background? cuz it looks like ten feet away.
and find a focus.. i'm sure you want us to look at your sword.. but it's not really itching for our attention. and why is it sitting in some kryptonite that's floating in some water under a solid looking dark sky?
sorry if i sound harsh. it's not itended. just trying to push you in the right direction.
if you want to stick to this water/kryptonite thing.. you can maybe drop the sword in a creek or something and have us looking at it under water with a few pebbles of kryptonite sitting around it. maybe a few rocks, a log, and some sort of dead leaf or grass on the surface of the water. the water could reflect some grass on the shore and a nice sky or a dark sky or whatever. the sword could be broken into shards or something. get interesting.

I'm going to completely revamp the scene, I couldn't sleep looking at it to be honest.... I have a better idea in mind with it
to answer some questions, the green is grass all 3d, the fog is the fog effect in the environment settings, and I really did too much and it looks bad right now, its not how I really imagined it.... you're right the mountain doesn't look right, that will be changed definitly, I got to hating it this morning when I was trying to sleep....
I'll give a close up of the sword once I get the metal right
yeah 3D isnt good for your health. i tossed and turned till 5 am last night just because i couldnt stop thinking about my current project.
oh and my first ever 3D scene was a sword on display. i love swords.

well this is my third sword I'm making, and its the best one I've made yet, I'm just trying to get the metal right...
the first sword wasn't the best in fact it just looked like a wierd looking dagger or short sword, the second sword I did was a broadsword that looked much much better and was a simpler design and this sword by far IMHO is the best one I've done yet. The only problem I have EVER had was making the right metal for the sword, no matter how much tinkering I did I just couldn't get the right look and I'm still tinkering with it. I'm looking at other people's swords as I find them I'm also looking at fantasy swords on line as well as other pictures of swords.... maybe its just me, I don't know but I'm probably getting closer and closer.

here is the sword without the scene original design

well.. sword metal can vary.. but the biggest most important thing about rendering that kind of metal is providing some sort of reflection map. now you can either surround your object with some kind of sphere with a texture on it or use HDRI to both light it and give it something to reflect. you can also use bump maps on the sword itself to simulate scratches. here's a render test i did to try to get the right blade surface. i used some area lights and a blurred reflection map (mostly white) to get the look.

also you should never pose something floating in space like that without having lights behind it that serve to separate it from the black. they're called rim lights. they're basically lighting the edge so that it's lighter than the background.
now personally i'd make the handle a little stronger by widening the handle and giving some more thickness in some of the wing areas.
do me a favor if it doesnt take too long and render the handle and the dragon guard from this same angle against a lighter background. also include a wireframe of the same shot. shouldnt take but a few tweaks to make the model much stronger.
